Help me decide on a name! Middle name will likely be James.

My current faves are:

Micah
Ezra
Joel
Jude
Luke
Louis
Gabriel
Heath
Phineas
Solomon
Caspian
Jasper

My favourite name is Ambrose but my husband isn’t on board :(

Agree…Keith is bloody awful for a baby! Nowhere in the same league as the gorgeous names OP has mentioned.

Jude-Eli Sebastian
Eli-Caspian Jean
Eli-Sebastian
Jean-Eli Sebastian

I really like Eli!

BornSandyDevotional · 14/01/2025 01:04

Anything like Ryan. Rylan, Dwayne, Hunter, Bear, Toffefee or Apollo, Thor, Musk or Cameron are also really daft names. As are: Elon. Boris, Adolf, etc ... Your choices are lovely. And congratulations on your baby!

paranoiaofpufflings · 14/01/2025 01:10

I'm not keen on Micah or Ezra. Nothing wrong with them just not my choice. All of the other names on your list are lovely. If pushed I think I'd go for Caspian or Phineas.

If you love Ambrose could you and DH compromise - why not switch middle to first and use James Ambrose?

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 14/01/2025 01:13

I love Micah (but not Mike), Joel and Gabriel (though don’t like Gabe).

Sebastian, Aubrey, Lucian, Cassian?

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 14/01/2025 01:15

@BornSandyDevotional how dare you be so rude about my darling Toffefee.

Needspaceforlego · 14/01/2025 01:15

So many to choose from and I love James.
My only comment is if you don't like the nickname JJ I'd avoid another J so Jasper, Jude etc.

Jelodah · 14/01/2025 01:17

Is this your first child ? If not ,what kind of name do the siblings have ?

@saltandvinegarchipsticks I meant no offence. There's so much fun with Toffefee. As my son, Rollo, attests. I also think Galaxy and Aero are mint names! 😁

BoleynMemories13 · 14/01/2025 01:37

My favourites on your list are Louis and Jude. I also like Joel. Luke and Ezra are ok.

The others really aren't my style.

reichs79 · 14/01/2025 07:48

My favs are Gabriel, Heath and Micah. Although I don't think Heath goes that well with James.

HugoYorway · 14/01/2025 18:25

James is a filler middle name and every other boy will have it as a middle name. It's a great first name though.

My favourite from your list is Solomon.

KayEmAy · 14/01/2025 18:27

Long time favorite, Luke. Recent favorite, Caspian. It would be a coin flip for me and I love the way both sound with James :)

Geranyums · 14/01/2025 18:39

I agree about James being THE middle name these days.... not very original!

Mirabai · 14/01/2025 18:43

Gabriel

I like the name Caspian but I’d avoid it for the Narnia-Disney associations. It’s a children’s book at the end of the day.

Lilyrudi93 · 14/01/2025 19:50

I’m REALLY not bothered about how popular James is as a middle spot. It was my Grandfathers name.

Definitely use James. It's classic and gorgeous. And who outside of your family do you know the middle name of? Guessing almost no one. Middle names never really come up much.

HugoYorway · 14/01/2025 20:21

@Lilyrudi93 , that's the stock MN answer. Amazingly, a huge number of MNers have a mum or gran with the name Rose, despite the name never having been very popular.

James is a nice name just over-popular as a middle name, so I suggest using it as the first name instead.
If you have a fairly unusual surname and first name, then the middle name doesn't get used. Your suggested first names aren't the massively popular ones.

I love James. It's a warm, beautiful name and can be adapted. My brother is a James and goes by Jim. My nephew, other sib's son, is a Jamie. In my heart and head - though my tongue will always go with their preferred names - they're always both James to me. It's a gorgeous name and so lovely to say. Plus such a strong history. Also, I challenge anyone to not be a bit won over by first impressions of someone introduces themselves as James. I am very biased. But it's still an amazing name impartially.

It's a lovely name. I almost feel i wasted it using it as a middle name for one of my boys. It's really grown on me over the last few years.

HugoYorway · 15/01/2025 11:34

James is miles better than the names on OP's list.
J-James doesn't flow and neither do the single syllable names.

Lilyrudi93 · 15/01/2025 11:54

Thank you everyone! Love the name James but don’t think I want to use it as a first name as it reminds me of two of my sisters awful ex boyfriends! Not ruling it out though.

At the moment my favourites are Micah, Joel, Caspian and Jude. Would probably choose a different middle spot for the single syllable J names but I do quite like Joel James. I also like the name Peter but just not a fan of Pete!

I used Thomas for Caleb’s middle name and I wish I could use it as the first name for this baby. I can’t do that though… can I??

Yep, you can absolutely use Thomas. You would be far from the only person who has used the middle name of their first child, as their next child’s name (famously even the Royals Wills and Kate did it), as middle name/s are just so rarely used (though I wouldn’t risk Thomas Caleb 🤣).

I think Thomas James is gorgeous btw- so classic/timeless sounding. I also love Peter but agree with you about the Pete thing. I disagree with pp that single syllable names don’t work with James - I think they’re fine. I’d probably personally go for a fellow Top 100 Biblical classic as a similar style to Caleb, so I think Thomas, Luke, Gabriel, Ezra etc are great choices.

Nellyelephanty · 15/01/2025 14:34

Jude or Louis get my vote

Needspaceforlego · 15/01/2025 14:56

I wouldn't use Thomas if you've already used it for the other child. I don't think it's fair because it means the older child is getting the option to use their middle name removed.

Youve got some lovely classic names there. I'd stick with James as a middle name and find another first name or switch and go James Something

bluebunnys · 15/01/2025 17:00

I definitely wouldn't reuse Thomas. Both your children deserve their own names imo.
