Which of these two names do you lean to and why?

Eric Testa OR Frederick Testa? I like both names.
Frederick feels elegant and classic, carrying a timeless charm with a slightly regal air whereas Eric is a strong and concise name. Its simplicity makes it modern and approachable, with a certain confidence in its brevity. So, it's been hard to decide. I am curious to know your opinion. The baby boy will be British but I guess it doesn't really matter. I know most people will say Eric is more common in America, but I don't mind how common the name is. Thanks for your opinion! 😌

Much prefer Frederick....it has good nickname potential and suits all ages.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/01/2025 11:03

I think the same about Frederick 😂

Everleigh13 · 13/01/2025 11:04

I prefer Eric. However, it is not a popular name on MN.

@BitOutOfPractice Because I'm in a hurry and it is good to have opinions of people and AI to compare. I have nothing against AI (though I'm biased as I work in IT with AI). But, thanks for your honest opinion!

I like Eric and think Frederick is awful.

Efillufwa · 13/01/2025 11:06

I prefer Frederick because it can be shortened if he wanted later on ( he might even shorten it to Eric!)
Eric he would be stuck with if he didn’t like it. I also don’t like the way it sounds. It makes me think of a heavy smoking old man and I have no idea why!

SelectedStories · 13/01/2025 11:08

Eric always reminds me of the godawful, pious Frederick Farrar novel (Eric,or Little by Little) about a Victorian public schoolboy going bad and cheating and drinking, and who ends up running away to sea and dying, after his friend and his little brother die, praying for him with their final breaths. I suppose it strikes me as weedy.

I'm not wild about Frederick either, though, so I think we just have very different taste in names. If you like the 'regality' of Frederick, though, take account of it potentially being shortened to 'cheeky chappie' Freddie?

MassiveSalad22 · 13/01/2025 11:09

I like Frederick as it is a friendly name. Really dislike Fred though. I know a squillion Freddies/Freds which puts me off but it remains a nice friendly name. Also Fred can be short for Alfred etc hence its ubiquity.

Eric - just a bit middle aged and therefore try hard for me. EG I know a couple of little Desmonds and would put it in that category.

Erik is totally different IMO and cool and manly. Irrational I know.

@Efillufwa Thanks for your comment. I see your point. Do you prefer Rick or Fred as a nn? I just personally find Fred too much used? so Frederick can be shortened to Rick or Ricky which I much prefer, but that is personal preference. What is your preference?

Frederick definitely! I personally love Frederick and he can always shorten it to Eric if he likes - it’s a very versatile name.

cordiallyuninvited · 13/01/2025 11:11

Eric is just not a nice sound IMHO. And reminds me of something to do with ears. I don't know why.
Frederik-Hm. It's not a bad name but Freddie just reminds me of frogs.

CornishTeaTime · 13/01/2025 11:11

Love Fredrick but it will be Im sure get shortened to Freddie by many

RosesAndHellebores · 13/01/2025 11:16

I prefer Frederick but actually I think Eric Testa sounds better than Frederick Testa.

Out of the 2 choices of nickname you like I prefer Rick I think, however, I think even if you chose to shorten it to this it’s more likely to end up being Fred or Freddie in the long run as it’s more likely to be what his friends would call him. If you like the ‘Rick’ part of the name you would be better off calling him Richard, Ricardo or Ricky, where it would be more of a natural thing to end up being called Rick.

ANiceCuppaTeaandBiscuit · 13/01/2025 11:20

I like both but prefer Eric, one of the nicest people I ever knew was an Eric, plus everyone will take it upon themselves to call Frederick ‘“Fred/ Freddy”, and most schools start phonics with ‘Fred Talk’ a stuffed frog called Fred.

MassiveSalad22 · 13/01/2025 11:21

Fun fact (well, if you’re a name geek) Jill Dillard (from 19 Kids and Counting) has a son called Frederick - whose dad is Derick and grandad is Rick 😁 actually love that

Expatinsingapore · 13/01/2025 11:23

Frederick, it can then be shortened to Fred or Freddie.

RoachFish · 13/01/2025 11:31

Frederick because it's more versitile. He can choose to be Eric/Erik, Fred, Freddy, Ed, Eddy/Eddie, Rick, Ricky. I prefer it spelled Fredric or Fredrik though, but that's maybe because I'm Scandi and it looks more correct to me.

Chuchoter · 13/01/2025 11:36

Not keen on Eric despite loving Eric Morecambe.

I like Frederick. It's a string masculine which can be softened with Freddie as a nickname.

I don't like Fred as it conjures up Fred West.

SallyWD · 13/01/2025 11:54

I like both. Eric is a good name and is becoming more fashionable these days. However, it's still not overused. My son has an 11 year old friend called Eric.
Frederick is also good and I like Fred or Freddie as nick names.
Sorry, I can't choose between the two!
