Wondering the general consensus on the name Miller for a boy?
We really like it but not sure if it’s polarising?
Surname is one syllable so hoping it works x

Personally I don’t like it as I consider it a surname, but that’s true for me of all those sorts of names eg hunter, carter, Hudson. it’s fine and not one I’ve come across much (I know of one newborn).

Herewegoagain8 · 10/01/2025 07:54

I really like it but I love names that are considered surnames, Carter, Cooper, Parker, Fletcher etc. I think you might find on MN it’s unpopular though, I posted a list of potential names for baby I’m currently pregnant with and nearly everyone slated these kind of names! We all like different though lol.

Thewrongdoor · 10/01/2025 07:54

Well, it’s a surname, but I suppose it’s no worse than other trade names like Cooper and Tailor and Mason. Can’t say I’m keen, though.

Same. I'm not a fan of the surname as first name thing and I don't get why you'd choose Miller but Teacher or Accountant would be weird. They're all weird to me. But lots of people will like it.

JustCuttinAboot · 10/01/2025 07:55

I’m not a fan, and am of a generation to think Windy Miller, so that’s another reason to say no.

if you like the surname vibe what about Archer or Mitchell (Mitch is a cool diminutive)

sel2223 · 10/01/2025 09:07

The only Miller I know is a grown man who's been called it for about 30 years but it's a nn - his surname is Miller (I can't even remember what his first name is at this stage, he's just Miller)

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/01/2025 09:22

I quite like surnames as first names so Miller sounds good to me 👍

Fluffyholeysocks · 10/01/2025 09:26

Not for me, I'm another who doesn't like surnames as first names.

HonestCrab · 10/01/2025 09:50

Not keen on it at all. I think of the plant dusty Miller.

NormasArse · 10/01/2025 09:52

I knew a child Miller. His story was horrendously sad, so for me that would make it an unlucky name. Not rational, I know.

Nextyearhopes · 10/01/2025 09:53

I would definitely assume that you are American (not a bad thing).

Kaminari · 10/01/2025 09:54

I like it, I like Fletcher too what a PP mentioned. I don't usually like 'surnamey' forenames but those are quite nice imo.

Travelodge · 10/01/2025 09:55

Since you ask, I don’t like it. I don’t like surnames as first names. It sounds American to me.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 10/01/2025 09:55

Will get 'Dusty' as nickname. Like it.

pimplebum · 10/01/2025 09:56

I’d assume you were aping American names

and as soon as you said miller id think windy!!
also you will be constantly asked is that your maiden / family name as people will assume that why you used it

PurpleBrocadePeacock · 10/01/2025 10:00

I think it has the potential to get mixed up with the girls names Milla, Mila, Mia, Maia, Maya etc. but if I really liked it that wouldn’t bother me.

Same...I encountered a little Miller through work who was under CP in the end. It was a "trendy" name picked by a very young Mum from a sad background herself.

I'm not personally keen on this sort of name...Carter, Hudson, Rider etc. I prefer Miles or Maximillian as far as M names go.

MostHighlyFlavoredGravy · 10/01/2025 10:05

Not to my taste, but it's not as bad as some of the other surnamey names.

I wonder whether it’s the same Miller. We were emergency FCs.

Bey · 10/01/2025 10:14

I really like it

SizzlingPrickle · 10/01/2025 10:15

I like it. It’s an old English/Scottish surname so I don’t get American vibes 😊

Maboscelar · 10/01/2025 10:17

I would assume American as well, or lower socioeconomic group if British (I'm aware this sounds snobby). It's not a proper name to me.

MyDeepZebra · 10/01/2025 10:19

I wondered too but our Miller was placed within his wider family and never in emergency foster care as family always stepped in.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 10/01/2025 10:20

I like it and also the trend for surnames as first names.

TartanMammy · 10/01/2025 10:27

It reminds of the range of Nike t-shirts that are popular with teenage boys 🤣. I'm not sure I could get passed that.
