Hello

Had decided on Edie Jayne and Lana Grace for our twin girls, but was speaking to my mum the other day and told her we had picked the names, but weren't telling anyone. She says "well i hope its not Edie!! i hate that name" she knew it was on our list from last time.

This has really thrown me and made me have doubts - also heard other people mention Edie Mcredie from Balamory!!!

Me and DH both had Kiki in reserve as well, but is this maybe a bit too quirky???

Just usuing you ladies as a sounding board really, as don't want to let on to R/L people what our names are, as we wnat some element of surprise!!

a bit late but agree that would not divulge any name choices until dc actually arrived and name decided.

we chose a completely diff one when ds arrived as the others didn't fit right somehow.

we diverted all the parents and their choices and insistence (!) by making up 2 names and letting them all bond with their disproval.

dontgetmestarted · 10/05/2008 23:38

my dd2 is also an Eden which we shorten to Edie.
I think it's a beautiful summery name.

MinkyBorage · 10/05/2008 23:41

My dd is Edith shortened to Edie, ALL the inlaws said they hated the name before beautiful dd was born, but now she's here, it suits her, and they love her and her name. Don't worry about it. It's great name, one of the best!!!

AHLH · 11/05/2008 08:34

You could always tell your mum that you hate her baby's name!

Thomcat · 11/05/2008 08:35

I'll love Edie. She won't hate it once it's attached to your child, it'll just be her name and she won't think about it.

spugs · 11/05/2008 08:49

wwe didnt tell anyone what we were going to call dd3v(ismay kate) and unfortunatly my family on my mums side were very rude about it. personally i think asking some one with a 2 day old baby 'why on earth would you want to call her that?' or pulling a face every time they hear her name is horrific behaviour and it spoiled my first couple of weeks with her as i started to doubt my own choice! everyone else loved it though, they were just being shit because it was unusual. call your babies what you want and tell them where to stick it, though im sure yoiur family will be no where near as rude as mine where

My Mum didn't like the names we chose for our two sons either. In fact, she accused us of deliberately choosing 'strange' names and kept pushing and pushing for us to use her choice. I told her, gently at first, but quite firmly in the end, that a)the names were not strange, just not common, particularly in the original Gaelic spellings we chose, and b)it was none of her business what names we chose for our children, just as long as we liked them. To begin with, when they were born, she would not use their names, referring to them only as 'the baby' but of course they soon got too big to be The Baby anymore and she had to use their have always loved their names, and wonders why my sister decided to go with the 'boring, old fashioned 'names which were in fact my mothers choices for us to use!
My advice? Go with yopur own choices. It is you and husband/partners choice alone.

nozmum · 23/08/2008 22:37

what did you go for? I have a Lana 18m!Great name

MissPitstop · 26/08/2008 16:29

She will get used to it Im sure, my Mum hated the names we chose for DS1&2 but we refused to change our minds on OUR choice. She thought they were strange we gave them more traditional middle names in case they agreed with grandma when they got older but they are now 8&9 and both love their names.

hecate · 26/08/2008 16:31

Your baby, your choice. She doesn't get a say.

pagwatch · 26/08/2008 16:34

tell her you have decided on something that is truly hideous - like shantazee or wankstain. When you have the baby and call it something fine she will be so relieved she will love it.
Thats what I did. I terrified my mother with T'Shaundra...

My mum has been making various suggestions throughout my pregnancy ever since she heard our choice of name (at 20w) - it finally came to a head when I lost it and told her to stop being so bloody rude in trying to push me into naming my own bloody baby with something she wants rather than what I want. It's not like our choice is even dodgy, it's Elizabeth ffs!

donnie · 26/08/2008 16:44

so many awful names.

I dislike all three names - especially Kiki which sounds to me like a cartoon character - but that really isn't the point. You need to pick the names that you're comfortable with and if you change for something more to your mother's liking, you'll have decades to regret it. As others have said, she'll soon get to love the names as she loves the babies.

As soon as baby is born everyone stops critiscing the name and says it's lovely, so do what you like. It's your baby. I like Kiki though, it's lovely.

Mamazon · 27/08/2008 12:26

tell her that you are goping to name the baby marmaduke, whichever sex it is.

keep it up till baby arrives. then she will be so relieved its not Marmaduke she will love the name, whatever it is,.

MrsPankhurst · 27/08/2008 21:24

I love both Edie and Kiki, but as nicknames/diminutives. Are you planning on longer "proper" names? They may prefer a more serious option in adulthood.

loisstella · 27/08/2008 21:43

You choose the name you like. My mother in law objected very strongly to a name I loved (she told me this when I just announced my pregnancy) and I still really really resent her for it. My daughter has a beautiful name but I was (and still am a little) furious that she spoke out so stongly about it, so I had to eliminate one of my 'top three' names.

loisstella · 27/08/2008 21:44

oh, and here's something I wished I said: "you'ved named your children, now its my turn"
