Pregnant with #2

With my first we knew what their name would be straight away (named after grandparent) but this time round I just don’t know!

Current contenders are:
Benedict
Matthew
Roman
Ronan
Thomas

Open to suggestions, all the suggestions ☺️

How about something classic but less used like Gilbert, Giles, Roland, Lawrence, Miles, Marcus, Magnus

Delphigirl · 07/01/2025 23:02

Oooh or Sylvester. I’m dying for someone to bring back Sylvester. So cool!

Have you checked your family tree for any nice sounding contenders that might be several generations back?

I will go against the grain though and say Thomas is gorgeous rather than boring- it’s so timeless yet while I know ones of all ages, it’s definitely a lot less popular than it used to be (I go to a lot of baby/toddler groups but I’ve only met one so far!) Great historical namesakes too. I like Matthew too but “Matt” puts me off a bit, whereas “Tom” sounds much more friendly to me 🤷‍♀️

William
Alexander (or Alasdair/Alastair if Scots links?)
Edward
James
John (definitely underused now)
Nathaniel
Joseph
Samuel
Maximilian (or Magnus)
Michael

Edward, Joseph, Magnus, Louis, have all been added to my list of possibilities. Lots of other lovely names but just don’t feel very “us”.

Rowan is lovely - but I only know girls with this name?

I know a few male Rowans and don’t know any female Rowans if this helps. Joseph & Louis are lovely names.

I love Joseph, my daughter was going to be Joseph if she'd been a boy.

Love the name Ronan, and don't think Ronan Keating is nearly famous enough nowadays to allow it to put me off. He certainly won't be by the time your child is grown.

While technically unisex since it’s a nature name, Rowan has very much swung to the boys in the most of the UK (probably due to its similarity in sound to Owen and that the most famous Rowan’s here are male). I remember reading that Rowan is growing more in popularity for girls in Scotland though and I think in other countries like the US.

Laurie/ Laurence..love this name .

RosesAndHellebores · 10/01/2025 22:07

Love Edward and Louis - may be biased.

Also from suggestions: Magnus and Merlin.

What about John? Not much used now.

LittleRobins · 10/01/2025 22:33

Thomas is my favourite of your options and, like you, I don’t know any under 30 either! What used to be a common name has now become more of a rarity. Thomas is a beautiful name.
