Some of those names, especially in the same list, are pretty identifying, it looks like you've written down the names of every child in the class. Might you want to get this removed?

Pigsinblankets13 · 06/01/2025 19:53

Lots of them aren't unusual?!

If that list of names are the names of every child in one class I want to know what school that is! 😂

Some terrible names there!! Some people think they are naming a pet rather than a human I think.
The only ones I've heard are
Oscar
Oliver
Leoni
Charlie
All very ordinary.

Hebe?

Hebe jeebie?

Hebe's a name from Greek mythology, a daughter of Zeus and Hera associated with youth. It's usually pronounced in English to rhyme with Phoebe; in Greek it's more like heh-beh. I wouldn't personally use it because "Hebe" is also unfortunately sometimes used in English as an antisemitic slur (first syllable of Hebrew, obv a different pronunciation), but I've come across a few UK Hebes; I think it might have been more common around the early 2000s.

I don’t work in a school, or in one set place if that helps, but I do work with children and these are some names I’ve come across both at work/people I know/out and about/ friends of DC etc 🙂

If you read again, I said unusual or love or also thought wtf so if it’s not unusual, chances are it’s a loved name ☺️

Honestly there were a few that I thought would suit a pet far more than a child but then having met the child they really suited their name on all occasions

I would be annoyed if I heard someone pronouncing Milena any other way than Me-layna/Mi-lehna because that's the way it's pronounced in South East Europe. And Mila is always Mee-la, since it's a word.

Navy. A girl named Navy. 🥴

I don't understand Bonnie's surge in popularity at all. I've known more dogs/cats/cows/goats with the name than human beings.

I don't understand Bonnie's surge in popularity at all. I've known more dogs/cats/cows/goats with the name than human beings.

From a Scottish perspective - Bonnie's a normal name that has held steady for a long time and then weirdly spiked recently in the rest of the UK/rest of the Anglophone world - similar to other Scottish names like Isla and Esme. Perhaps people are pulled two ways about wanting a traditional, "real" name and also wanting something a little friendly and informal? I really like names that end in an -ee sound, and it can be a challenge to find ones that are also trad names - like Daphne, Naomi, Lucy, etc. That may be part of Bonnie's appeal.

CurlewKate · 09/01/2025 08:15

I really hate "unique" names because I think they are usually unfair to children and just self indulgence for parents. But someone in my circle has just had a baby girl called Story. A fraction of me-a tiny fraction- loves it.
