Gia or Gigi?

I love the name Gigi and have always been set on it as my little girls name. If her name is Gigi the middle name will likely be Sofia. However I also like the name Gia, and can’t decide if that is would be a better option than Gigi. If we went with Gia we would change the middle name, probably to Isabelle. Which would you go for?

Gia is definitely my favourite of these ☺️

Gia with Gigi as a nickname works perfectly.

Not sure about Gia Isabelle, though. It becomes Gia Risabelle in my head.

I see what you mean about Isabelle, would maybe have to rethink a middle spot. I just always had Sofia and Isabelle chosen as my middle names.

I voted Gia but don't think Isabelle works as a middle. Maybe Gia Francesca, Gia Natalia, Gia Rosanna etc? I actually don't mind the rhyming of Gia Sofia but I can see why you've ruled it out.

IsadoraQuagmire · 05/01/2025 15:23

I also think Gia as an official name, she can still be known as Gigi but she might prefer Gia when she's older.

VenusClapTrap · 05/01/2025 16:35

I like both. Love Giselle and Ghislaine too. Shame Maxwell made the latter unusable.

Purplewallsrock · 05/01/2025 16:46

What about Gianna Isabelle? Gives the option of both Gigi and Gia as nicknames .

Emanwenym · 05/01/2025 18:14

Gianna Sofia is fine. Gia or Gigi as diminutives.
Gia Isabelle will be Jee-uh-Risabel.

Gia with Gigi as a nickname
Gia Isabella is cute

EmpressaurusKitty · 05/01/2025 18:17

Gigi sounds more like a nickname, Gia more like a name that could work for any age. I’d avoid anything ‘cute’ like the plague unless you also give your DD an alternative.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/01/2025 19:00

Gia, no contest- although like others I think Gigi is fine as a nn (whether for Gia, Georgia, Georgina or Josephine).

Gia Isabelle also sounds fine to me - although if you really want to make the Gigi nickname obvious then Gia Josephine also works.

theduchessofspork · 05/01/2025 20:55

I think Gigi really needs to be short for something like Georgina, or it’s a bit like you are naming a small dog rather than a person who may not always want a fun fluffy name.

Gia is OK but a bit nothingy - isn’t it usually short for Giovanna?

Orphlids · 05/01/2025 20:59

Ah, go for Gigi! I really love it, it’s such a positive sounding name to me. Exciting, fun, a bit sexy. I’d be excited to meet a Gigi. I imagine a very cool, confident, well-read sort of young woman. But the name would be cute for a little girl, and still sound sophisticated for an old lady.

shmivorytower · 05/01/2025 21:00

For me Gigi is and will always be a male name (short for Luigi).

Gigi D’Agostino came to mind! And Gigi Buffon 🤣

SchoolDilemma17 · 05/01/2025 21:45

Gianna Sofia or Gianna Isabella and call her Gia

no to Gigi

Bobbing46 · 05/01/2025 21:48

For some reason both names just remind me of real housewives. I prefer your middle name choices

AmiablePedant · 06/01/2025 00:38

Oh dear, I'm not sure I'd name a girl baby after a moderately famous French novella (and a famous film of yesteryear) in which the heroine, Gigi, is a young girl who is being groomed to be a high end prostitute (well, courtesan), in Paris!

But they wouldn’t be naming her after that Gigi presumably.

Gigi is fine, OP, and doesn’t need to be short for anything. My daughter has a very similar name, which is commonly used as a diminutive. She is an adolescent now, and loves her name. And she’s named after a character who came to a dramatic sticky end, and that is no drawback either.

Giovanna with Gia and Gigi as nicknames.
