Ellie, Elsie, Phoebe and Ella

suzettenoisette · 02/01/2025 23:55

We took a few weeks to think everything through, then added these four names to our list. Any thoughts?

Ellie - Elsie - Ella - Phoebe

The others on the list: Ruby, Keira.

For any of you who are interested; we decided to use Rosalind as the middle name, so that part has finally been decided. So it would be Ella Rosalind, Keira Rosalind, Ruby Rosalind, Ellie Rosalind etc.

We took Lucy/Lucie off the list, because we couldn't decide on the spelling and we took Annabel/Annabelle off, because I personally don't love just Anna and think it might get shortened.

Ruby is my favourite but Ruby Rosalind sounds ridiculous so that's out, if you're 100% set on Rosalind.

Phoebe or Ella would be my next choice. Keira is ok. I'm not keen on Ellie or Elsie as stand alone names, they sound too nicknamey and infantile.

You seem particularly drawn to El names, so I'd advise Ella Rosalind.

Comedycook · 03/01/2025 09:40

Ella and Ellie are the nicest imo.

Really dislike Elsie.... frumpy and twee. Vintage but not in a cool way imo.

Phoebe is ok.

Keira is a bit nothingy

Please use Ella.

we recently lost our Ella aged 21. She loved her name and she was a kind and caring young lady.

I'm so sorry for your loss! Ella is a beautiful name.

I personally like the sound of Ruby Rosalind and people have given good feedback. It doesn't sound ridiculous to me, but I guess people are different. We like all of the names paired with Rosalind.

Lucy and Anna are not on the list ;) Sorry if that was confusing.

All those names have peaked and are unfashionable.

I like Ruby Rosalind too - the alliteration sounds so pretty.

CraftyNavySeal · 03/01/2025 12:02

They all sound a bit twee sorry, plus I’m 32 and I know 5 Ellies, 3 Phoebes and a Ruby my age, so these names seem a bit dated now

shoopshoopdedoo · 03/01/2025 12:50

Phoebe is my favourite, followed by Ruby.

I don’t mind Ellie or Ella.

Not keen on Keira or Elsie.

Treemules · 03/01/2025 13:02

@CraftyNavySeal
I’m a similar age and wouldn’t say any of these were overused at all in our generation to the point of being dated now (I know one Phoebe one Ruby and a few Ellie’s my age).
But if anything it’s a good thing and shows they’re classics that aren’t going to date terribly like some flash in the pan names!

Lisbeth50 · 03/01/2025 13:06

I like Ruby Rosalind.

I agree that Ell- names are very popular and have been for a long time so I'd avoid them. Elsie can be short for Elizabeth or Elspeth though so Elizabeth Rosalind or Elspeth Rosalind.

I don't like Phoebe. Ciara Rosalind is nice.

Leeloo1233 · 03/01/2025 14:57

If there's one thing I've learnt is that unless you plan on naming your daughter Anna or Elizabeth and son James or George, the mumsnetters will hate it! :D The name will be dated or too on trend, wet, twee or otherwise nothingy.

Another vote for Phoebe Rosalind ❤️

And another

SwankyPants · 03/01/2025 15:02

I love Elsie. My daughter was Ellie for a few days but ultimately it wasn't right for her

UnisexChipshop · 03/01/2025 15:05

Phoebes are EVERYWHERE, and no one can spell it, despite there only being one spelling.
Yours, parent of a Phoebe.

At least it's memorable. And when you say it people know what you have said your name.

There are so many Eve/Ella/Ava/Ellie/Evie/Elsie/Elsa names. And Elle, often a nickname for names that start with an L.

I do love the name Phoebe but working in a Reception class, it has to be the HARDEST name for a four year old who is being taught how to phonetically spell!
Ph-f oe-ee be-bee

I love older names like Margot, Mabel etc so my favourite on your list is Elsie.

Luckily, children normally learn to spell their names by sight and memory and don't rely on phonics. How do you suppose children with names like Aoife, Niamh, Siobhan, Roisin, Sinead, Mairead, Lasairfhiona, Caoilfhionn, Saoirse, Sean, Eoin, Seamus, Ailbhe, Donncha, Proinsias, Conchubair, and Peadar manage?

Plus, Margot isn't exactly phonic.

pooballs · 03/01/2025 18:53

What about Elise?

HangingStars · 03/01/2025 19:06

I love Phoebe, that would be my choice.
2nd choice would be Elsie.

I really don’t like Ruby, especially with Rosalind, and Keira Rosalind has too much “ra-ruh” in the middle - it doesn’t flow well at all.

Ellie is a nickname and Ella sounds unfinished. Both very very commonly heard nicknames of girls throughout nursery and primary school.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 03/01/2025 19:14

I like Elsie best, followed by Phoebe. I agree with a PP that Keira Rosalind isn't a great combo.

I teach in a girls' school and (not that it matters), we have quite a lot of girls called Ella and Ellie, quite a few called Ruby and Phoebe and a few Keiras (variously spelled). No Elsies though, but maybe they will be along in a few years, as those slightly old-fashioned names came back into fashion!

Emanwenym · 03/01/2025 19:20

@AllProperTeaIsTheft , Elsie is very popular. It's #14 in England & Wales.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 03/01/2025 21:12

Definitely Phoebe

TempsPerdu · 03/01/2025 21:41

Definitely Phoebe Rosalind. It’s the only one that won’t get lost in a sea of similar El- names. Phoebe is popular in its own right, but there aren’t many similar-sounding names to confuse it with.

There will be far more Phoebes being born now than there were 32 years ago. It's a hugely popular name with under 5s.

RatRatPig · 02/01/2025 23:58

I like Phoebe best.

Phoebe Rosalind is very cool

Yes I agree

The others are very overdone and a bit twee, other than Kiera which is a bit 90s

mum1345 · 04/01/2025 08:13

I like the alliteration of Ruby Rosalind.
That's my favourite.

Not a fan of Phoebe, I'm not sure why just find it a bit of a boring name.

Elsie is pretty, as is Ella but it is a bit more popular if that bothers you. But they are popular for a reason as they are loved names.
