Frederick, Albert or Eric in the UK?🇬🇧

My Husband is British/Italian and we would like to choose a more international, kind of cool name for our baby boy. His last name will be Testa. I have thought of Frederick, Albert and Eric (as my name starts with E), but this is not a hard criteria. It has been difficult to choose a name. I won’t use any nicknames as will teach the child to only respond by his full name. I don’t particularly like nicknames in general. Thanks for your opinions and happy new year! 🥳

I’m not keen on names ending in -bert, but also I wouldn’t go for one ending in a t with your surname.

CeciliaMars · 31/12/2024 19:26

I think Frederick goes best with your surname.

You won’t have any control over nicknames once they’re at school, if not before.

Frederick will be Freddie.

Albert might ve Al, Bert, Bertie, Albie.

Therefore you need to go with Eric, which doesn’t have any obvious nicknames in the UK

Eric has the nickname Rick.

I like Frederick and Eric, but given your criteria would definitely choose Eric. I don’t think you will be able to avoid nicknames, no matter how hard you try, so Frederick will become Freddie or Fred. My son has a longer name and we always use the full version but Brits aren’t able to resist a shortening, even if you or he never use it!

Personally, I don’t like Albert at all. Plus I don’t think it works if your surname begins with “t”.

Moreteaandchocolate · 31/12/2024 20:31

I like Frederick best, but in secondary school he is very likely to shorten it. Albert is also quite nice but again he will likely end up as Albie or Bertie. I personally haven’t met anyone called Eric and associate it as a comical name for cartoon characters, but I’m sure I’d change my opinion if I met an Eric. It is least likely to be shortened, so your best bet if that’s important to you. How about George, Jack, Henry, Louis, Luke, James, Toby, Leo, Noah, Oscar? They are less likely to be shortened.

Nextyearhopes · 31/12/2024 20:33

Eric is my least favorite of the 3 but sadly the only one that won’t be shortened to an insufferably juvenile ‘ie‘ nickname.

BootballJoy · 31/12/2024 22:57

Eric 100% if you don't want a shortening. In the UK it is vanishingly unlikely Frederick won't be Fred/Freddie, and Albert Al/Albie/Bertie.

I visually don't like Eric Testa's letters, sorry, nor Eric T.
Albert Testa said aloud sounds clumsy.

I prefer Frederick Testa.

AdaColeman · 31/12/2024 23:32

Erik! Fantastic name!

MinnieMountain · 31/12/2024 23:38

I like Frederick.

Throwing Edmund/Edmond into the ring.

MsMajeika · 31/12/2024 23:43

Sorry, OP, but I don't consider any of these names "cool"! Are you Italian too?

If you're going to be living in the UK, an Italian name would sound much more international and cool.

theduchessofspork · 31/12/2024 23:50

If you want something international I’d go for something like Alexander, James, Leo or Noah.

There are far too many Fredericks and too many Alberts in the UK. Eric is OK but doesn’t go with your surname.

BeretInParis · 01/01/2025 01:18

Not Eric. Sorry. I'm being juvenile (as will kids) so 'erection testicles' (a bad mash up of the name Eric with your surname makes it a no from me.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 03/01/2025 08:47

No to Eric.

I like Frederik shortened to Freddie or Albert shortened to Albie.

GRCP · 03/01/2025 09:00

You can refuse nicknames and they do have control over it. DD has a name that is very commonly shortened but hers is always the full name - it's just what her name is and she wouldn't answer to anything else.
