Hi everyone

My husband and I are debating possible names atm (due in Sept so wee while to go yet), and for a girl he really likes the name Violet. However, our surname begines with a D, I think it's too cruel to give a child the initials VD, he doesnt think it will be an issue as they have different terminology for those diseases now .

What do you think?

Unfortunately, while it's true that we now have new terminology, you can pretty much guarantee that at some point some charming person will make a joke about it. Saying that, I doubt there is a name in existence that people can't make fun of with a bit of thought so if you really like the name, I'd go for it. Perhaps you could add a middle name so less likely to make the connection.

belgo · 02/05/2008 15:45

I wouldn't like that very much.

RTKangaMummy · 02/05/2008 15:53

I am sorry but I agree with the others BUT:

What about giving her 2 names

like Jenny VIOLET D***

but call her Violet then her initals will be JVD

NatalieJane · 02/05/2008 15:55

I had similar problems naming DS2, we really liked Bradley, but our surname begins with O!

The MN consensus was that it was cruel.

Having said that, we are just a bunch of batty old women on an internet site, if you like the name, then go for it

As someone who has the initials vej/veg (very innocuous I know, but kids blah blah blah) I'd say don't.

WowOoo · 02/05/2008 15:59

NO! it's not when she's little but a teenager that matters. Know of someone who named a friend of friend with dodgy (sorry!) initials and she has never forgiven her parents, was always the brunt of jokes etc.
But, things/attitudes may change. The names we wanted spelt really funny things so we chose against them;knowing if they cracked us up so much other parents would surely have a snigger too. It may well build strength of character....

I never considered the initials when naming my DC. I have FM and DM.

Violet's a gorgeous name. You could give her a middle name to break up the initials, e.g. Violet Clare D

Family friend had the initials BAG and was known throughout his school days as Baggy. He hated it!

TheFallenMadonna · 02/05/2008 17:05

I have had three sets of initials in my life. Each one spelt a word. DH's initials spell his first name

Our children's initials are meaningless. By design.

pinkorblue · 02/05/2008 17:08

By the way, Violet is a beautiful name but I wouldn't go with VD, mainly because I would always be wondering when or if someone was going to notice the initials.

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/05/2008 17:16

I'd avoid it. We had to rethink dd's name because our first choice would have left her with the initials ARS.

hupa · 02/05/2008 17:29

I went to school with a VD and she really did have to put up with a fair bit of teasing/abuse. Mind you, that was in the 80´s - maybe your husband will be proved right, but I wouldn´t want to take the chance.
