Hi everyone

My husband and I are debating possible names atm (due in Sept so wee while to go yet), and for a girl he really likes the name Violet. However, our surname begines with a D, I think it's too cruel to give a child the initials VD, he doesnt think it will be an issue as they have different terminology for those diseases now .

What do you think?

Unfortunately, while it's true that we now have new terminology, you can pretty much guarantee that at some point some charming person will make a joke about it. Saying that, I doubt there is a name in existence that people can't make fun of with a bit of thought so if you really like the name, I'd go for it. Perhaps you could add a middle name so less likely to make the connection.

I am sorry but I agree with the others BUT:

What about giving her 2 names

like Jenny VIOLET D***

but call her Violet then her initals will be JVD

I had similar problems naming DS2, we really liked Bradley, but our surname begins with O!

The MN consensus was that it was cruel.

Having said that, we are just a bunch of batty old women on an internet site, if you like the name, then go for it

As someone who has the initials vej/veg (very innocuous I know, but kids blah blah blah) I'd say don't.

NO! it's not when she's little but a teenager that matters. Know of someone who named a friend of friend with dodgy (sorry!) initials and she has never forgiven her parents, was always the brunt of jokes etc.
But, things/attitudes may change. The names we wanted spelt really funny things so we chose against them;knowing if they cracked us up so much other parents would surely have a snigger too. It may well build strength of character....

Violet's a gorgeous name. You could give her a middle name to break up the initials, e.g. Violet Clare D

Family friend had the initials BAG and was known throughout his school days as Baggy. He hated it!

I have had three sets of initials in my life. Each one spelt a word. DH's initials spell his first name

Our children's initials are meaningless. By design.

By the way, Violet is a beautiful name but I wouldn't go with VD, mainly because I would always be wondering when or if someone was going to notice the initials.

I'd avoid it. We had to rethink dd's name because our first choice would have left her with the initials ARS.

I went to school with a VD and she really did have to put up with a fair bit of teasing/abuse. Mind you, that was in the 80´s - maybe your husband will be proved right, but I wouldn´t want to take the chance.
