I just want some honest opinions please so don't worry about offending me. I am just trying this one out and would like to know what peoles perceptions are of this name

Dexter.

I was thinking of Harry or Thomas but Dexter has grown on me but I'm not sure if I'm having a mad pregnant moment

I looked at it and thought I liked it, but having said it over in my mind am not too keen.

If that makes any sense at all!!

I like Sebastian, and think that would ne my choicwe if i ever had another.

VersdeSociete · 02/05/2008 14:38

There was a Dex on Dynasty many moons ago - possibly he was even Dex Dexter. It is quite American. Also a bit plasticky.

I love it, funnily we were just talking about that name in the office as a collegues DS is called it.

choccypig · 02/05/2008 14:39

Sounds nice and modern without being too off the wall.

BUT

It's a breed of cattle. Would you call him Jersey, or Hereford?

Eleta · 02/05/2008 14:44

You have come up with some of the same negatives that are bothering me. I am worried it sounds American and tacky.

I am not worried about it being a breed of cattle as I don't feel many people would know that and it is a proper name

The TV series is my fave programe at the moment, that's what got me thinking about it I know that's not a great reason behind naming a child!

johnso · 02/05/2008 14:47

Dexter...hmmmm, not sure

nooka · 02/05/2008 14:48

I've never heard of that breed before (now of course I have Googled it)I don't think the association puts people off calling their sons Angus or their daughters Kerry so I wouldn't worry about that. To me it's Dexter's laboratory, which we like - in fact one of our servers is called Dexte (dh is a total geek). I'd be worried if someone suggested calling their offsping Black Baldy though!

ClareVoiant · 02/05/2008 14:48

at this name. ds was very nearly called Dexter Morgan , dp and I were laughing about it the other night as we watched 'Dexter' on the telly. I'm so pleased we called him Jake now.

zebedee1 · 02/05/2008 15:10

I like it very much! Although I live in west london where unusual names seem quite common - if you know what I mean [sceptical]

Do you have other DC and does it sit well with their names?

cyteen · 02/05/2008 15:20

I love it Mind you, I used to have a mad crush on Dexter Fletcher when I was a Press Gang-watching teen, so you may want to discount my advice.

Blandmum · 02/05/2008 15:20

Dexter makes me think of cattle

brimfull · 02/05/2008 15:26

no
don't like it

AbbeyA · 02/05/2008 15:29

Too American.

Nbg · 02/05/2008 15:31

I like it.
Wanted it for ds1 but dh said no. Tried again for ds2 but got another no

I don't like it, but I don't really have a problem with it either. Go for it if you like it

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/05/2008 17:19

I like it, but something about it would stop me using it. Not entirely sure what though!
Does make me think of Dexter Fletcher as another ex Press Gang fan.

sophiewd · 02/05/2008 17:21

Mmmmm Dexter, still got some in the freezer, very tasty, on another note I like it.

Isn't there an MNer with Dexter (or possibly even 2) It's not my kind of name, but I think it's an ok name. I certainly wouldn't at a child with that name at all.

jivegirl · 02/05/2008 17:40

Hi Eleta - I'm with you on this one. Find myself strangely drawn to 'Dexter' but don't think I'd actually take the plunge..

Again I'm another one probably reminiscing after my youth.. Dexter Fletcher - yum.

Posey · 02/05/2008 17:41

I really like it. In some parts of the country no-one bats an eyelid at more unusual names, in other places more "normal" names are used. I know when my sister was trying to think of a name I ran through dd's year list. Her response to some of the more unusual names was "he'd be teased mercilessly round here with that name!"
Just something to consider.
