Baby boy #2 due any day now and we cannot lock in a name. Leo was a sure thing for most of the pregnancy, then we switched to Raphael, now I’m back to Leo but husband is firm against and locked on Raphael (I’m concerned it’s a bit of a love / hate name and don’t love the inevitable nicknames Raf / Rafa). We just can’t agree and it’s at the point we almost need something completely new but I can’t find anything I’m ok with.

Our criteria is that is not a trend / fad name, easy to say / spell, masculine (no gender neutrals), doesn’t stand out as overly foreign in Europe or Australia (kids are mixed nationality and will be involved in both cultures), and fairly timeless - could be a baby or adult. Our eldest is Max - ticks all these boxes and we adore the name. Please send inspo!

Max goes well with both Leo and Raphael. They are both lovely names. You don't have to shorten Raphael to Raf etc though others may.

What about
Hugo
Raoul
Bart
Jonas / Jonah
Julius
Ivan

Jasper ?

Firsttimebabymummy · 31/12/2024 09:41

Max and Alex was my first thought.

Leeloo1233 · 31/12/2024 11:18

Definitely Hugo! Very international, familiar in all of Europe, masculine and easy to say and spell.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 31/12/2024 21:44

Luca or Lucas was my first thought for some reason but timeless William, Thomas or Samuel are also very international. Or go similar diminutive style like Max with Jack, Zack or Alex (though that last one may be too gender neutral for you).

JessyCarr · 31/12/2024 21:54

Luke

@Belen82 I have a max and a leo 💙

StampOnTheGround · 01/01/2025 14:13

I could have written this myself @Belen82 😂 our eldest is Max and I'm currently pregnant with boy number 2 (have a little longer than you though - 12 more weeks!). We had decided before getting pregnant we liked Leo although we've both gone off the idea! Wondering if we will have to default back to that though, as this boy needs a name at some point.

We also have no names that we both love, so please update this thread when you decide - as it could be the name I need too haha!

(I'm not keen on Raphael)

Good luck with everything x

Max and Ben
Max and Lucas
Max and Ross

@StampOnTheGround ohh that’s so funny!! Max is such a great name it ruins all other name choices because so hard to meet up to that standard !! I have honestly read thousands of names and haven’t found anything we like as much. Do you like Gabriel? That’s my Max’s middle name and I love it but of course can’t use it now. I’m leaning towards reverting back to Leo, feels like the safe option (if I can get my husband on board). What other names have you considered?

I do love the name Leo, great choice IMHO.

OliveLeader · 01/01/2025 17:17

I wouldn’t say Leo or Raphael were fad names but they’re definitely trendy / of the moment (in that they exploded into popularity quite recently and are both very popular at the present time). There is nothing at all wrong with that, but it is maybe something to consider if that’s a negative for you.

How about:

Caspar
Francis / Frankie
Dexter
Logan
Angelo
Marcus
Rowan

mathanxiety · 01/01/2025 17:32

Raphael is lovely.
Rafe is a nice diminutive if you don't like Raf or Rafa.

Suggestions:
Ivo
Sam(uel)
Oscar
Hugo
Bram
Ari
Felix
Leon
Asa
Otto
Adam
Jonah
Jack
Reuben

Why not see what baby looks like when he’s here. One might just fit better than the other :)

Noa is quite popular as a girls name in some European countries!

I like Leo or Hugo. I love the boys names Harry and Aidan

Sandwichgen · 02/01/2025 10:17

John

John, John, John

Don't all babies look kind of the same? I mean, does a baby really 'look' like a Nigel, George or Nicholas???

Agreed! I never understood the waiting to see what they look like thing. Anyway they change so much in the first few weeks!

Happymchappyface · 06/01/2025 14:45

They do. I was dead set on one girls name, but when my daughter was born she just didn’t ‘fit’ it. I can’t explain it but it wasn’t her name.

SatinHeart · 06/01/2025 14:55

Leo is nice but it is very very popular round my way at the moment.

How about:

Jonah
Joseph
Daniel
Luke / Lucas

(I'm not religious but I do like nice solid biblical boys names!)
