Hallie or Pippa? Sister for Belle

Just that really! Hallie or Pippa as a baby sister for 2yo Belle? We wouldn’t go for a longer name eg Philippa etc, just choosing between those two!

Belle and Pippa sound the best for sisters.

Belle and Halle rhyme too much.

VenusClapTrap · 29/12/2024 12:21

Pippa.

UpMyself · 29/12/2024 15:45

Neither. Belle and Hallie will end up as Belly and Hal.

TangerineClementine · 29/12/2024 15:46

Pippa

Pippa does not translate well, it has a very rude meaning in some languages. It could be quite an unfortunate name to bear if she chooses to travel when she's older.

I think the 'll' in Belle and Hallie mirror each other well.

Holly is quite similar to Hallie, if you like Holly?

Oh it’s fine! Our family has a Pippa who got asked their name in a Greek airport when younger. They’d set of the scanner and officials wanted to put her at her ease before using the wand, I think. They did a bit of a double take, check with her parent who confirmed the name and then carried on without using it. If she ever wants to live in one of those countries, she can use her full name or a different nickname.

RollOnTheNewYear · 29/12/2024 15:56

Just to add, we took the decision not to tell her it was a rude word but we’ll make sure she knows when she’s an adult.

On the contrary, I'd say that story illustrates exactly why it isn't 'fine'. A young girl is obviously oblivious to the meaning of her name in a different country, and to the fact that others are raising eyebrows at it. An adult would rightly be mortified to find out their name means something rude, and others are laughing at it.

There's a reason Fanny and Dick died out in this country!

I do see what you’re saying but nobody laughed. It was totally fine. We don’t actually know it was a rude word in Greece when she was named but I don’t think it would have changed any decision.

Who knows what the actual next rude words are going to be.

I had friend at school who’s parents from Hong Kong gave her a name that was humorous for similar reasons in English. Both first name and surname.slightly harder for her as they lived in England. I’m sure there are loads of examples of this around the world.

I understand what you're saying, that we never know what names/words will become unusable in the future, but if someone was to point out something potentially problematic about a name you're considering while you're actually pregnant, surely that's got to make you think maybe it's not such a good idea?

They may not have laughed then and there, as she's a child and that would have been damn right cruel, but you can guarantee they will have had a laugh about it once she'd gone. Fine as a child, this wouldn't have even occurred to her, but as an adult she would be well aware that her name is making people snigger behind her back. Unavoidable if the name has already been chosen, without knowledge, but I don't understand why anyone would knowingly do that to their child if it's pointed out before the birth that the name could cause embarrassment for their child.

Hallie for this very reason.

LlynTegid · 30/12/2024 17:05

Pippa. Not setting a daughter up for a lifetime of having her name incorrectly spelt.

Sidebeforeself · 30/12/2024 17:06

Hallie and Belle ..too close to Halle Berry to my ears!

bakingmad123 · 30/12/2024 17:25

I have a Hallie and a Bella and people always comment on how their names go nicely together

(Btw - maybe people could be a bit gentler about expressing if they prefer one or the other - no need to be obnoxious - my teenaged "Hallie" was reading over my shoulder and is now in tears at some of the comments!)

Obviously I didn't realise she was there / looking

Scutterbug · 30/12/2024 17:30

Pippa x

PurpleDiva22 · 31/12/2024 06:00

"Has rude meaning in other languages".... either tell us the translations or dont bother mentioning it! 🙄 Anyway, a quick Google tells me Pippa is a Swedish crude slang term for sexual intercourse and an Italian slang word for masturbation. A similar sounding word in Greek, πίπα, is a crude Greek slang term for fellatio.

OP both names are nice. The translations thing wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I'd personally choose Pippa because I don't like overly popular names and Hallie is growing in popularity where I'm from, but both names are gorgeous. (FWIW, my name translates to vomit in one language, and it has never caused me an ounce of bother)

Edited

It peaked your interest enough to Google it though. I wouldn't have wanted to save you the bother 😉

Tbh my main reason for not sharing the translations was that the post would be deleted if I used such words on here. I could have gone fluffy, like you, but much more fun to let people Google for themselves I think 😂

I'd say the languages you've mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg. It might not bother you in the slightest, but I'm surprised people would pick something knowing the different meanings/translations without a second thought for how it might bother their future child one day. As I said, accidentally picking a name without knowledge of different meanings is one things, but knowing it and still picking it would be quite different. I couldn't do it, which is why I always think it's worth pointing out to others who may be oblivious.

Dixiedot90 · 31/12/2024 08:00

I like both but Pippa is better with Belle

Firsttimebabymummy · 31/12/2024 08:05

Hallie, I really like that name too.

Pippa isn't my cup of cup of tea but it's okay. I know a few dogs and ponies called Pippa.

thefarrierswife · 05/01/2025 22:07

Both are nice and go well with Belle but I’d go with Pippa. Biased bc I have one, she is Philippa on birth certificate but only ever Pippa. Had no problems in other countries with it. Like Hallie too, and very close to my other daughters name, Hattie. She has longer version on birth certificate but like her sister only ever called the shortened version.
