Isla with Irish spelling

We love the name Isla for a baby girl but our two boys have Irish names (Cillian and Donnacha). So we would like another Irish name. Can Isla be spelt in Irish to sound the same? Or is there a close Irish name similar to Isla?

My favourite is Ádhfhlaith meaning "lucky princess" but maybe simplify the spelling to Ádhla.
But that won’t be pronounced Isla?
Ádh isn’t pronounced ‘eye’ so that spelling won’t work.

I know Eileen is equated with Eibhlín, but i read Eibhlín as Evleen.
It’s pronounced both ways. Eibhlís is pronounced Eye-leesh too.

Personally I’d stick with the Isla spelling, OP.

Maybe without the fada then, like the fadhb that it is.

Aontaím leis seo.
Bí cúramach leis an t-ainm Isla: tá triúr acu i rang mo mhac-sa; Isla Mór, Isla Beag agus Isla Rua!

I get all of it but not the adjectives, are they Big, Small and Red?

Me too.

If my own name is anything to go by Ádhfhlaith will get a few 'How do you say that?'s or 'Adflayth's (or worse).

Yep!

Okay, but you shouldn’t really suggest that OP uses a fada if you really mean no fada. It’s a different spelling, different pronunciation, different meaning.

If my DD will go to a Welsh-medium school in Wales, and we speak Welsh, but we love the names Niamh and Aoife, but we'd like a name spelt the Welsh way, same as DC1 and DC2, could we spell it
Nîf Îffa?

Emanwenym · 28/12/2024 12:49

or Nî'f Îffa?

Or should we use something else like Nia Efa?

** accept that Aoife and Efa aren't direct equivalents but they're examples of popular names.

Eibhlín, which is pronounced Eye-leen (Eileen) or Ev-leen/Ev-uh-leen.

Edited

I think Eileen is a gorgeous name and due a revival. Much more unusual than Isla now too, which has become very popular.

Emanwenym · 28/12/2024 12:55

@VenusClapTrap , I think it sounds pretty but there was a ghastly party song that made reference to the name.

I loved Isla for a little girl however we had Lila set as second name (after a grandmother) and thought Isla Lila was a little sing songy so we changed it to Éala, she was only born last December and we pronounce it (Ay-la) however I have seen people spelling it Aela also. It’s still quite uncommon in our county however my aunt teaches about 30 mins away and she said there’s 6 Éala’s in her school ranging from P1-P7 so not as uncommon as I thought!

Currently expecting twins, gender unknown, but they’re identical so 2 of each and really struggling with short, not super common Irish names! Feel like Fíadh, Croía etc are doing the rounds for girls as gorgeous as they are I know so many now so any help would be great 😂

How about Inis (In-ish), one of the Irish words for island, which is a direct translation of Isla?

Please don't try Inis!

Yes, if you wouldn’t call your child ‘Island’, don’t call her Inis. I sometimes think English people don’t grasp that Irish people actually understand and/or speak Irish, that it’s not like Elvish.

Isla / Islay is pronounced eye-la

JustsoyouknowImnotlying · 31/12/2024 23:59

@villainousbroodmare that's a good point. It's a very popular one these days.

JustsoyouknowImnotlying · 01/01/2025 00:03

@Qwerty1991 I meant to add, if you love the babe I'd just use it as it is. No need to spell it differently in my opinion.

Yes, I know that.

Name. Not babe🫣

My MIL uses that song as her ring tone, and she is an Eileen.....
