Emily? Does it feel dated to the 00s now?

Me and dp are struggling to pick a name, he likes Emily which I like too but I'm a secondary school teacher and a few years ago there were so many Emily's so I always think of it as a name of baby girls born in the 90s/2000s. I know it's an old name from the 1800s with good historical namesakes (Brontë and Dickinson)

I looked on the ONS and it was number 2 from 1996-2002 and then managed to get to the number 1 spot in 2003-2004. It's now number 28, which probably means it had its peak and is now fading. This is my first baby so I'm not sure about the names that are popular in primary schools these days, is Emily still as common as it was 15 years ago or has it faded?
I know im probably overthinking because it's such a well known name but I just don't want to give my dc a name that could come across as dated these days.

Thoughts?

I don't think it's a name that will go out of fashion really, it's a classic name.
DD has an Emily in her class in year 5, I also know Emilys that are my age (40s)

I’ve never thought of it as trendy, just classic. I don’t think it dates the same as a lot of other traditional names. I’ve always loved it.

CitizenZ · 20/12/2024 18:28

Lovely name... Go for it!

Ohhhthedrama · 20/12/2024 18:31

It's a beautiful name ( I'm biased. I have an Em)

RuthW · 20/12/2024 18:36

It's a bit dated now.

RoundSquareWithTriangles · 20/12/2024 18:47

I think it's a bit dated personally. It is more likely her peers mums will be called Emily than a classmate.

emmax1980 · 20/12/2024 18:49

I like it

dizzydizzydizzy · 20/12/2024 18:50

I know a 4yo Emily.

It's a classic.

Floralsofa · 20/12/2024 18:55

I love the name Emily, it's classic and will never age.

JoJothegerbil · 20/12/2024 19:01

I have a 27 year old Emily. I still love it, it's a classic name.

Northtosouth · 20/12/2024 19:02

I have a young child and never come across an Emily at playgroups etc but I wouldn’t consider it dated either. I have come across some Thomas’s and Matthew’s recently which I’d consider similar to Emily.

There were quite a few at my eldest dd nursery and she's only 7 now. It is a fairly popular name around central Scotland even now.

There's one in her gymnastics class too out of 10 girls. It's a lovely name.

Emily is quintessentially British.
A sweet timeless name.

As is Emma.

GeekyDiva80 · 21/12/2024 03:23

I've just had a big baby and named her Melissa 😄. I was also worried about it being a bit dated, but have had loads of compliments. Emily is a beautiful name 😍

GeekyDiva80 · 21/12/2024 03:24

Just a baby, not a big baby. So wierd 😂

BoleynMemories13 · 21/12/2024 03:41

Emily is classic. It's not hugely popular anymore but it's not unheard of either. There will always be a few around. We have 3 currently in our large primary, in Reception, Year 3 and Year 6 so dotted well throughout the year groups. I also know of a 1 year old Emily. In 15 years of teaching in primary (infants) I've only taught 4 I think. I don't automatically think 00s when I hear Emily as I know of Emilys of all different ages.

It's on a par with the likes of Charlotte, Sophie, Emma, Alice and Elizabeth in terms of current popularity. None of them are wildly popular anymore but I can't see any of them going out of the top 100 any time soon as they have universal appeal still and I've taught a handful of each over the years. None of those feel dated to a particular era. They're very classic choices.

onthesteppes · 21/12/2024 04:27

It’s so boring. You may as well just call her ‘girl’.

Purplecatshopaholic · 21/12/2024 05:41

Timeless classic. Lovely name.

PedantScorner · 21/12/2024 11:23

Classic. Amelie is very 00s. I prefer Emma, which was popular in the1970s and 80s.

It's 'My DP and I', BTW and Emilys not Emily's.

My test is 'what would I think if a member of the Royal family used it?'.

mitogoshigg · 21/12/2024 11:36

Timeless classic and likely to be popular again soon due to Emily in Paris and my twenty somethings being obsessed with that show

CruCru · 24/12/2024 05:05

Emily is okay. I am a bit put off it because it was so popular about 15 years ago but that is my issue.

Agree with this. Sorry!

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 24/12/2024 09:47

I don't think it's dated, its the sort of name (like Elizabeth) that may not be especially fashionable right now but is classic enough to be always acceptable. For what it's worth, I really like it.
