Gregory, George, Theodore, Nicholas or Sebastian? Help!!!

ThatLilacExpert · 19/12/2024 23:36

I’d like a name for my baby boy that is stylish, sensible, doesn’t have thousands of this name in his classroom in the UK, and most importantly, doesn’t have a bad association or funny connotations (like Piercing Albert or Willie William that sort of thing)
I’d appreciate any sensible opinion and insights. So far I like Gregory, Nicholas, Sebastian, Theodore and George. I am struggling to decide as I find these names so elegant and distinctive. Please help!

Can't imagine calling a baby "Greg"
The rest are fine.

@Confused228 What is wrong with the nickname Greg?

They are all quite common apart from Gregory (for good reason imo)

Can't picture a Greg under about 50 years old.

Stichintime · 19/12/2024 23:41

Don't like any of them except for Nicholas. Do know loads though, of all ages, from months old to in their 50s.

Can't picture a Greg under about 50 years old.

This ^

First thing that springs to mind when I think of Greg, is that main character in Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He also isn't very nice.

The other names listed are much better (imo)

Georgie743 · 19/12/2024 23:48

Agree Greg isn't very nice. The rest are lovely and classic. Theordore / Theo / Ted / Teddy is super popular so avoid that if you don't want several in his year at school.

MumonabikeE5 · 19/12/2024 23:50

They are all good names. Gregory is nice.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 20/12/2024 00:03

I had Gregory on my list for DS 24 years ago! Was going to shorten to Grey. Like all of them, though personally think Sebastian and Nicholas sound a bit wet, and don’t really like Nick as a short version.

natwalesrug · 20/12/2024 00:05

Laurence or Sebastian.

@Twoshoesnewshoes what do you mean by wet names? Can you clarify please and give examples?

Gregory is lovely! I love strong, classic (no others in the class!) names for boys.

FutureFry · 20/12/2024 00:53

Theo and George are in the top 5 this year aren't they? So I'd avoid if you want less common.

I like Sebastian the best from your list.

Other options: Alexander, Michael, Paul, Joshua.

I can't imagine a baby called Gregory. Also, it just makes me think of Gregg's, the baker

Sunnyflow · 20/12/2024 06:24

I think Theodore and George are overused and boring. Theo in particular will start to sound dated soon

Sebastian has terrible nicknames Seb/Sebbie or Basty (bastard) and reminds me of sebaceous

I like Nicholas and Gregory as they're both classics but not so overused

How about Quentin or Reuben?

Gregory is the only one that fits your criteria. Then Sebastian.

Moreteaandchocolate · 20/12/2024 06:50

George and Theodore are lovely but very popular.

Gregory is old fashioned in a bad way.

Nicholas is a bit dated but a classic.

Sebastian is perfect - fits all your criteria well (as long as you like “Seb” for short.

Alwaystired2023 · 20/12/2024 06:52

Sebastian

EachandEveryone · 20/12/2024 06:53

My friend has a lovely Gregory and he’s a fine young man Greg really suits him. It’s better than Douglas which I am seeing everywhere at the moment

SardineJam · 20/12/2024 07:03

How about Luke?

I have a Nicholas "Nick", none others in primary school and only one other in Secondary

MerryChristmasToYou · 20/12/2024 07:04

Gregory - it's OK, but I can't imagine a Greg being pleasant.
George - very popular
Theodore - overused and it's a name I dislike
Nicholas - OK, plenty of them my age, all Nick now.
Sebastian - OK but I don't like Seb

I'd pick Nicholas out of those. Matthew has a similar vibe, as do Christopher, Jonathan, Jeremy and Timothy.

MerryChristmasToYou · 20/12/2024 07:07

@ThatLilacExpert , I think of 'wet' names as being that of a clingy child.
A bit of a 'mummy's boy' or similar.
Quentin is worse than wet and Reuben is wet.

Douglas is fine. I'd be looking at names that haven't quite come back yet. There are plenty of them like Gordon, Duncan, Stuart, Dennis, Terence, Patrick, ...

lifesrichpageant · 20/12/2024 07:14

I've always felt Gregory was an under-rated name. I love it!

Abracadabra12345 · 20/12/2024 07:16

natwalesrug · 20/12/2024 00:05

Laurence or Sebastian.

My choices too.

I also love Gregory

JumboMumbo3467 · 20/12/2024 07:17

George is timeless, can’t go wrong. But always popular.
Others are a bit of mouthful and would be shortened.
I personally like Gregory.

Jeeeeez · 20/12/2024 08:16

I know so many Georges it’s ridiculous. There are a crazy number in one of my DC’s year at school. Theo is nicer than Theodore although will probably get shortened anyway.
