Are these names too similar?

I have a DD called Lily (just before it became very popular). In my opinion, and it's just that, Lily is the prettiest name in the world. However, I had a tiny pang of regret of not naming her Lilith and using Lily as a nickname, as imo it's just as nice. I'm pregnant and don't know what I'm having, but if it's a girl, I really want to call her Lilith. What would you think if someone you knew did that? Are they too similar?

OP, I hope you're not seriously considering giving a second child an alternate version of your DDs name?

You might not nickname her Lili but everyone else will (because Lilith is a really ugly name) and then both of your daughter will have the same name & everyone will think you're batshit

I'm sorry but it would be ridiculous. It would be like having a Katie and Catherine, or a Alfie and Alfred. A Tommy and Thomas, or Lucy and Lucinda.

You may never call her Lily, but you'd be limiting her ability to ever have anyone shorten her name. She'll spend her life saying "pleaee don't call me that, that's my sister's name", which will probably be quite embarrassing as they're so ridiculously similar she'll then know other people will be thinking wtf when they find that out. It would be unfair.

I'm sorry, but sometimes in life you just have to let names you love go. This is one of them.

And what happens if Lilith decides she wants to shorten her name to Lily (because what else can she shorten it to and you can’t ban her from ever shortening it), or her school friends call her Lily?

Honestly, do you really need to be told they are too similar. They’re practically the same name!

Surely Lily is just a shortened version of Lilith? It'd be like calling a boy Joe and his younger brother Joseph. I know many children who have the shortened version of a name as their birth certificate name and I think it would be really odd if their sibling had the longer version.

If you called your eldest Lily before it became popular, she must be almost an adult by now, so their lives will probably be very separate. Better than if they were a couple of years apart.

No probably’s about it, it’s almost the same name and is certainly the same diminutive. It’s like Leigh and Leanne or Susan and Suzanne, Ann and Anna etc

I like Marnie very much. How about Sadie, that’s a great name imo.

Always makes me think of Lilith from Frasier.
