Thinking of using Eleanor for baby girl due soon but wondering how people perceive it,
is it still popular? Or would it be considered dated now? Is it a classic?

Should add we aren’t keen on Ellie but I don’t mind Elle or Ella for shortened version/nn

I don't love it but I do know an Ellena who gets called Elle and I like that

17caterpillars1mouse · 08/12/2024 21:59

I consider it a classic but prefer Eleanore.
I only know one under 5.

I'm not sure you'll avoid Ellie though unless you always introduce her as Ella rather than Eleanor

OtterOnAPlane · 08/12/2024 22:01

I like Eleanor (all spelling). But there are millions of Ella/ Ellie / Elles among the preschool/ primary kids I know, so I would worry about her being one pf a crowd.

UltramarineViolet · 08/12/2024 22:05

Eleanor is a classic and has avoided being as overused as Charlotte, Sophie, Emily etc

My only concern would be the almost inevitable shortening to Ella or Ellie which are bothe very noughties and overdone

BoleynMemories13 · 08/12/2024 22:06

How would you pronounce it? Here it would be El-eh-nuh, which I don't mind, but I know some say El-eh-nor, which I really dislike. It sounds very posh.

I think Ellie is the most natural shortening, but you could definitely get away with Elle if you push for that. Ella seems less natural to me. If you want Ella just go for Ella, as it's a lovely name in it's own right.

Nell/Nellie can also be short for Eleanor, if you like that?

wellingtonsandwaffles · 08/12/2024 22:06

This was high on my list but I loved nn Nell Nelly

Whichoneisthebest · 08/12/2024 22:07

Love it! Very classic

Moreteaandchocolate · 08/12/2024 22:07

Eleanor is a lovely classic. It did peak in the late 90’s but it’s stayed steadily in the top 60 since then so I definitely think it’s stood the test of time. There are quite a few “El..” names in the top 100 that can become Ellie / Elle / Ella, so it does feel more popular than it is. There is the option of Nell / Nellie though, which is lovely if she wants a less commonly used nn one day.

Ratrags · 08/12/2024 22:10

Its is one of the greatest names and comes with a great lineage.

shoopshoopdedoo · 08/12/2024 23:05

I really like it. It’s a classic. You could use Nell as a nickname.

LoveBluey · 08/12/2024 23:11

It's absolutely beautiful and I know one who successfully uses no shortened version, always Eleanor (although I'm sure this will naturally happen at school)
But at school kids get all sorts of nicknames regardless of whether there is an obvious shortening or not!

For what it's worth I actually like Ellie as a name as well.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 08/12/2024 23:14

I love it along with Elianne

bridgetreilly · 08/12/2024 23:26

Love it. Len or Lenny is a fun nickname.

bridgetreilly · 08/12/2024 23:26

Or even Nora as nn.

GreyTS · 08/12/2024 23:38

Great name, my mum is Eleanor, she is called El generally but I considered using it for one of my girls and using Nell as a nickname

notatinydancer · 08/12/2024 23:46

Lovely name , I wouldn't want it shortened , but I suppose friends might as she got older.

sel2223 · 09/12/2024 00:11

Eleanor is lovely. Classic and timeless, not overused

ByHardyAquaFox · 09/12/2024 00:41

It is a very beautiful name.

RogueFemale · 09/12/2024 00:43

I think of it as a tired frumpy name, and would hate to be called Eleanor.

Againstreason · 09/12/2024 00:44

Lovely classic name. No need to be a Ellie. Elle/Nell can be a diminutive if she wishes later.

SnowFrogJelly · 09/12/2024 01:12

Lovely

Sunnyflow · 09/12/2024 13:10

Personally I find Ellie VERY overused.

KirstenBlest · 09/12/2024 13:13

It's OK but I don't love it. I dislike it being said as Ellen-OR.
I'd be put of by the overuse of Ellie and Ella. Nell is nice.

It's much nicer than the El names like Eliana, Eliane, etc They seem so nothingy.

songbird3086 · 09/12/2024 13:16

I have three Eleanor's in my life all different generations ( not related ) and they go by Ellie, Nellie and Nora.
Beautiful name in my opinion and it suits through the ages
