Boy and girl names- Scotland

Mudonstairs · 07/12/2024 20:59

We live in Scotland but don’t necessarily need baby name to be Scottish.

What do people think of these names? Erin, Harper, Hazel for a girl.
Harry or Henry for a boy.

Any other suggestions welcome 😊

Do you like ..

Hugh
Alistair
Angus
Digby

Elspeth
Lorna

Genevieve

I like Alistair, Angus and Digby. I don’t think DH will approve though! He may perhaps tolerate Alistair if he’s in a good mood.

Hazel is lovely and Erin is ok. I really dislike Harper though. It's a modern fad which will date quickly.

Harry and Henry are both classics. Harry can of course be a short form of Henry, so you get the best of both worlds if you like both.

Roisin ( my daughter claimed adamantly that her new friend at nursery rejoiced in the name ‘Machine’ 😁

One of Roísin Murphy' albums is called "Roisin Machine".

I still like Henry and Harry the most. The girls names I am not so in love with. I was just trying to see if there are any other boys name contenders with our faves but maybe Harry or Henry are the best. The girls names may needs some more work.

I really like it too and thought it a good substitute for Hazel. They go well together.

It’s so funny that I usually don’t have to ask DH for his opinion on much. We have very different tastes in clothes and style and I am so used to just doing what I want, but a baby name is one that we must agree on 😂

Lorne was also a king of Scotland, I'm sure, so it's fine.

I know a few, aged in the 30-50 bracket. Haven't heard of any young Lornes.

Alastair / Alistair / Alasdair is a fabulous name if you can get the past all the spelling issues.

I believe Alasdair is the preferred Scottish spelling.

Again, I know quite a lot (various spellings) but the youngest one I know is 17. Goes by Ally.

SFRSmum · 10/12/2024 14:01

Thinking of recent Scottish names I know of

Murryn/Murron
Isla (v v v popular)

Lorne
Dougald
Angus
Arran
Murdo

Call a baby girl Henry - short for Henrietta 😁
Or go all Georgette Heyer and have ‘Horry’ short for Horatia.

Merida ( Disney 😬) , Meghan , Shona

EvelynBeatrice · 10/12/2024 18:21

Like PP but Meren for a girl. Met a little ‘ Maggie May’ recently who was sweet.

DH has already said no to Effie. I do quite like it! Not sure the novelty would soon wear off. Will update once we choose one!

I don’t think Harper is Scottish. The name doesn’t have to be Scottish. Perhaps I shouldn’t have mentioned that we live in Scotland. I just thought it’s worth mentioning because every part of the UK has different name stats. I would like a name that fits in with the names here but also not too common. Nothing foreign sounding or difficult spellings/pronunciations. No offence intended by that, but I have a foreign name myself that sounds like a very common English name and I’m constantly having to correct people. It does get annoying and I sometimes wish I was just called Sharon! 😂
