How do you pronounce this:

Emyrd ?

I thought it was Emryd, which I can pronounce, but Emyrd has me floundering.

Any ideas?

I think I'd probably go for:

Em-eee-r-d

llareggub · 28/04/2008 22:00

Am not welsh speaker but welsh born and bred. This isn't a name I've come across.

Hobnobfanatic · 28/04/2008 22:16

Thanks! I think it must be spelt wrong - I've not seen it before at all (not even in those books of obscure baby names).

Em eer d. roll the r

llareggub · 28/04/2008 22:51

I've googled it and got hits. I've looked for my book of welsh names and can't find it.

Is it a name for a boy or girl? I'd say boy, I think.

Disenchanted · 28/04/2008 22:53

Quick 'but in ' here,

my granny always says 'yackydar' when one of the kids pick up something gross... she says its welsh. Is it? And what does it mean if shes right?

Desiderata · 28/04/2008 22:53

lllrryddddggypdddgggghhhh go go gogh.

Fabulous name.

moondog · 28/04/2008 22:55

'Yackyda' is 'Iechyd da' which is 'good health'

Emyrd?
Nah,don't know that one.
It would be pronounced Emirrrd (like first part of 'Emirate' with trilled 'r'.

You're not getting confused with Emyr are yuo?

llareggub · 28/04/2008 22:57

Oh, that's not what we say when we pick up something yucky. We say something like:

"Ych y fi"

Have always thought that yacky da (which isn't spelt like that) is slang for goodbye.

llareggub · 28/04/2008 22:58

Well, I am a non-welsh speaker from the lower Swansea valley!

moondog · 28/04/2008 22:58

Ych a fi is literally 'yuck.
I olny sussed it was Welsh when I said it to a group of English kids at the age of about 9 and they looked at me like i was mad.

llareggub · 28/04/2008 23:04

My (english) friend had an english granny who used to called her beloved granddaughter "little mochyn."

My friend was bemused when I told her what it meant.

AHLH · 29/04/2008 16:51

Are you sure you don't mean Emrys? This is my welsh nephew's name. No Emryd in my name book.

TakeMeHome · 29/04/2008 18:50

Hobnob - my husband is Welsh. He says you pronounce it Em-ur-d (but the d at the end is almost a soft th sound). He also said it's very unusual.
