Abby or Emma

Hi all, posted before looking for some help with baby girl names.
We decided to drop Katie, Anna and Natalie from the list. We won’t be using these (please don’t try and change our mind on this it’s been hard to get this far 🤣).
Now we are stuck between Abby (this spelling not Abbie and not short for Abigail) and Emma. We both slightly prefer Abby but worry about the spelling issues. We love Emma too especially as it’s a timeless classic.

Which would you pick?

Correction: The dental surgeon before last had an English name, but it's a word not usually used as a first name in the UK, and he goes by a diminutive. His surname was from a Commonwealth country.

Emma's a lovely name but very common in my age group (30s/40s), it's in the same sort of category as Victoria, Lucy, Rachel, Louise, Lauren, Hannah etc. Nice but a bit boring.

I'm 55 and an Abigail - majority of people call me Abi, only my mum calls me Abigail. Often also called Abs - love my name

Sheeparelooseagain · 23/11/2024 11:48

I personally prefer Emma but go with your favourite. I've taught Abby's that are just Abby and I never seen it cause a problem.

I am an Abi, short for Abigail, still get compliments on what a lovely name it is, have never heard scabby Abi, flabby Abi or any such thing, not to my face, anyway.
So I voted for Abby, but think you should go for Abigail. People do often spell my Abi wrong, and Emma wouldn't have that issue, but it doesn't bother me one bit. That said, I did pick names for my children that can't be spelled wrong, so perhaps it did bother me on some level!

Personally I love Emma and only like Abby. I like Abby on its own better than Abigail, though, and I don't think it would be that much of a problem nowadays, when so many children are called things like Ellie or Charlie or Ronnie as a full name.

twentysevendresses · 24/11/2024 22:01

Emma ❤️

RogueFemale · 24/11/2024 22:37

Abby not-short-for-Abigail is still a nickname. I would hate to be called Abby without my actual name being Abigail or Arabella or whatever.

I vote for Emma and its simplicity.

FunnysInLaJardin · 24/11/2024 22:38

Abi! Abby is not the right spelling

me too! I'm an Abigail and I love my name too. Abs or Abi, although the number of times I get Abbey, Abby. It is very much Abi!. I'm 53 btw

Daisybuttercup12345 · 26/11/2024 23:20

Emma without a doubt.

TheYeaSayer · 26/11/2024 23:27

Emma. It’s a proper, timeless name.
Abby just looks like a nickname; never seen it used as a stand alone.
I have an Abi, but she’s Abigail. If you called her Abigail with Abby as nn that would be so much better.

Drivingoverlemons · 26/11/2024 23:32

Abby is nice but short for Abigail which is a lovely timeless name. I had several lovely friends called Abi/Abby (Abigail) at school. We never called them Abigail! Emma is my personal favourite of the two but they are both really nice.

KnickerlessParsons · 27/11/2024 00:04

I prefer Abi.

RuthW · 27/11/2024 12:11

Emma

Abby is half a name

stopringingme · 27/11/2024 13:21

Emma

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/11/2024 13:23

Emma. It's a lovely name, and if you call her Abby everyone will assume her name is Abigail over and over and over.

hby9628 · 27/11/2024 13:26

My eldest is Abigail. She's never been called scabby! She gets Abby by her friends & teachers but rarely me...not for any particular reason.

I wanted Emma for our youngest but we went with Emily

Both fabulous names imo!

MushroomQueen · 27/11/2024 13:43

Emma was my choice last time on the thread and it remains.

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 27/11/2024 13:54

Emma, by miles. Simple, international, classic, unusual in her generation.

Don't saddle your child with a shortening as a full name.
