Hi, so we have named our newborn Oliver but it's essentially because we really like Ollie for him. I can't currently imagine calling him Oliver and don't enjoy when other people do, but had planned to register him as Oliver to give him the option of the fuller name, especially when adult. But now having pangs that if I don't like his actual full name on him that much I've made the wrong choice? Will I get over this? Or should I change it? But are there any other boy names with a similar vibe to Ollie? Then there's also the worry about how popular Oliver/Ollie is..Have read through so many lists and not finding much inspiration at all, even getting to Ollie was hard work. All advice welcome.

I would stick with Oliver (which is a great name) but call him Ollie from the beginning. It'll soon stick

We registered our son as a longer version of the name we liked. We did like both but he was always going to be the shortened version. Literally no one calls him the long version, he doesn't even understand it's his name and he's 4!

I love the name Oliver. It's a name I would choose if I had a boy. Ollie is a nice name that you have decided to shorten it too, too.

What I will say is that when your little boy is being a very cheeky toddler, you may appreciate being able to call him Oliver to show you mean business 😄

Oliver is a lovely name. He can be Ollie day-to-day.
People will take your lead if you introduce him as Ollie.

Congratulations. 👶

My son was Oliver for the first few months of my pregnancy - it’s a great name.

He’s best friends with a Louie which I think is a very similar vibe.

I know a few who have a more formal name but get called a shorter name and people think that’s their actual name. I’d go for the more formal name on the birth certificate.

eg Ingrid is Inga, Oliver is Olly, Maxwell is Max, Lynda is Lyn

i do however know 2 boys who are Olly and that’s the name on their birth certificate..

I changed my sons first name to his middle name after around a year. Nobody cared and he is still officially with the doctors and on his passport his first name but at school, family and friends, he is known by his middle name. It has never caused a problem.

Agree with this! My son has a long “official” name but is always called by his shortened name and it sticks.

Thanks everyone, great advice, we're going to stick with it!

Your dc your choice .. I have a Gabriel.. Often got asked when was I going to use Gabe? Never was the answer!! In his 20's and still full name. If you prefer Ollie use it. If some call him Oliver I guess you'll have to grin and bare it...
