Middle names - 1 or 2?

Have a first name sorted and a middle name, wondering whether to have 2 middle names with a surname, so 4 in total. Know never used in day to day life so not an issue. Have a family member who hates having 2 middle names with a passion. I would like to use the second one.

do you have/used 1 or 2 middles?

My son has two middle names. To match my partner who is John (first name) and David (middle name) and my twin brother whose middle names are ‘John David’. Everyone loves it. His name is quite long with his first name, two middle names and surname but it suits him. Partner was against it at first but now loves it x

my boys have one middle name but both my girls have two. they were both born on significant dates (armistice day and the 75th anniversary of ve day) so i wanted to add an extra middle name to pay tribute.

That would be lovely. As long as you and other half agree, then it’s your decision. Family members will get over it after seeing beautiful baby. The name won’t be used in every day life anyway so it’s not like it really matters how many names they have. Although our son does get called his full name when he trumps 😂 x

My son has one middle name - it was hard enough picking his first and middle!
Daughter has two middle names as we just couldn't decide between them Grin

My son has one middle name (after 3 grandfather's) and both mine and his dad's surname....so four!!!

MaJoady · 15/11/2024 18:12

My daughter has 2 middle names, one "normal" and the second is my maiden name.

I have 2 middle names one after each grandmother . My girls have 2 as well after both their grandmothers, a beloved great aunt and the female form of FIL’s name. They all happened to be classic names we liked and are a good balance to our DC ‘s more unusual names. We argued about first names and the middle names were easy to choose.

mamaduckbone · 15/11/2024 18:27

My eldest ds has 2 middle names (both mine and dh's grandad's names) but ds2 only has one (my dad's)
I don't think it's a problem either way - go with what you like.

MovingDilema · 16/11/2024 08:30

Thanks, I think I will go for the two names as it’s a name I wanted to use for the first but didn’t quite fit

My DC all have 2 middle names. DH does as well (as does his brother but his sister just has one!). Their middle names are all family names, one from my side and one from DH's, keeps the grandparents happy. Although DS has a middle name that both sides think is theirs so I did very well there!

MinPinSins · 16/11/2024 10:51

I have two. The second sometimes gets left off official documents. It just feels so very pointless.

I gave my son one.

Carouselfish · 16/11/2024 12:44

3! Airline forms are a bust.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/11/2024 20:27

2 is fine - lots of people have 2 middle names (including myself, my child and several of my family and friends). Afaik It was always popular historically so parents could choose a name to honour someone from each side of the family or both Godparents.

Just ideally try not to choose 2 long ones as often forms have a maximum of 26 to 30 letter spaces and your child will end up having to pick one name or just use their middle initials - it’s hardly a huge deal in the big scheme of things if that happens though.

MovingDilema · 17/11/2024 18:34

Thanks, still hoping we’ll decide when we see them!

i have 2 and always hated having 2. I was quite firm about my kids just having the one

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 18/11/2024 07:44

My children have two. It’s a tradition in my husbands family and not something I cared too much about either way.
If it was fully my choice probably would have gone for just one but think either is fine really

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/11/2024 07:50

Both our sons have two middle names, not deliberate at all but dh and I couldn’t agree on one so we basically chose one each with both sons

it really is not a big deal at all. DSs frequently forget what they are and get reminded when we get the passports our to go on holiday. The middle names never get mentioned anywhere else.

MumonabikeE5 · 18/11/2024 07:53

If you have two middle names figured out use them, if you are scratching around to find a second then have one.
Both kids have three fore names and a single surname.

MovingDilema · 18/11/2024 11:31

Have one set in stone, and have a second name that we loved as a first name but didn’t quite work so want to use that as his second middle name, rather than having 2 for the sake of it. It just tells more of his story.

I've got two, I'd like more.

Flev · 18/11/2024 12:18

I have two and dislike it. Combined with a long first name they don't fit on official forms. Maybe it would be OK if all 4 names were short - but otherwise it's a definite no from me. DD has just one middle name.

Fontainebleau007 · 18/11/2024 12:29

I have 2 middle names
My eldest has 1
My youngest has 2

purplehills32 · 18/11/2024 19:44
