George is my favourite boys name but I love all of your choices!

I would pick George Oscar.
Arthur is my second favourite - Arthur Jude sounds good
Henry Jude
Oscar George
Alfred George

Jude is my least favourite for a first name because I know a few female Judes (as short for Judith)

Edward (Ted) has a similar feel too 😊

Mumofgirls2017 · 15/11/2024 11:13

Henry (also love Freddie and Arthur!)

DuchessOfSausage · 15/11/2024 11:27

1 George - classic,popular.
3 Arthur - classic, popular
5 Alfred - ok but wouldn't choose it.
6 Jude - don't like it at all
4 Oscar - popular but I'm not keen
2 Henry - classic, popular

George on the grounds that I don't like Art or Hen.

user1492757084 · 15/11/2024 11:28

My top three combos...
George Henry - 10/10
Oscar George - 9/10
Henry George - 9/10

Sk1sk0 · 15/11/2024 12:33

Alfred and Jude are my favourites personally

Cartref26 · 15/11/2024 13:45

Thanks everyone some great combinations so far and my feelings are being echoed regarding Jude - not sure it fits!

MerryMarys · 15/11/2024 14:15

They're all very popular and imo overused

But if I had to choose, then Henry

MumonabikeE5 · 15/11/2024 14:22

Robert

MabelMaybe · 15/11/2024 14:28

Arthur came to my mind when I saw your thread title, but I hadn't clicked on it. Go for Arthur!

Cartref26 · 15/11/2024 15:05

@MerryMarys with the exception of Jude, I feel like the rest are more ‘classic’ than popular/overused. Yes there will always be lots of Arthur’s and George’s, as there has been for generations. For us, popular / overused would be very ‘current’ names :)

MerryMarys · 15/11/2024 15:51

I don't know a single Arthur born in the 1970s or 1980s whereas I know about 20 aged 15 and under, so don't agree that it's a timeless name. It feels fashionable right now

Cartref26 · 15/11/2024 15:58

@MerryMarys possibly regional - Arthur is on the list as it was my partner’s grandad and great grandads name for us which I suppose makes it seem more ‘classic’ to us. It really seems to vary doesn’t it - Oscar is a very popular name according to the ONS data but around by us I only know one in the entire primary school I teach in, and none across family and friends. I do think it varies a lot based on where you live.

George!
Henry or maybe Alfred as second choice.

I don’t like Arthur personally, but I’d go with George Arthur if that has family significance.

Jude is my least favourite.

LauderSyme · 15/11/2024 16:18

Jude doesn't feel the same to me as the others and I'm not sure I like the long vowel sound.

I have a soft spot for Alfred but I like all of them. George Alfred and Alfred Henry are nice.

Amos
Angus
Edgar
Ivan
Hector
Herbert

anonny55 · 15/11/2024 16:31

Freddie , George and Henry are lovely!

A lot of people I know have called their little boys Arthur. Personally I don't like something that's very popular at the time..but it's your choice ultimately!

Firsttimebabymummy · 15/11/2024 18:44

George Henry
George Oscar
Alfred George

These are my favourites

GreyhoundGal1 · 15/11/2024 19:41

I love the name Arthur. Definitely a timeless name, has been around since at least the middle ages and was the brother of Henry 8th. My top 3 combinations would be:

Arthur George
George Arthur
Oscar George

BrieHugger · 15/11/2024 19:44

James Arthur
Sorted!

ZiggyZowie · 15/11/2024 19:45

Arthur Henry

Waterboatlass · 15/11/2024 19:51

I like Alfred (actually prefer Albert!) George. Fred or Alf as a short form or in Albert in full.

Atishooo · 15/11/2024 21:53

I know soooo many George’s and Oscar’s!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 17/11/2024 03:50

Henry Arthur. I think it’s nice if names are family ones but Arthur goes in and out of fashion, whereas Henry is the most timeless on your list for the first name spot (apart from George, but I find the sound of it quite stodgy). Henry could be of any age and background, is fairly international and it has a couple of nn options too if for any reason he dislikes it.

Jude is very trendy (and doesn’t sound that nice imo) and retro Oscar and Alfred are also pretty fashionable (although I do have an soft spot for Alfred as it makes me think of Alfred the Great).

Other ideas would be William, Edward, James, Thomas, Alexander, Joseph, John or Samuel as I like a classic. Wildcards (as you also seem to like retro names) would be Wilfred or Hugh.

mathanxiety · 17/11/2024 04:41

Oscar Henry
Oscar Jude
Oscar George
Henry Arthur
Henry Oscar
Henry Alfred
Henry Jude
Arthur Jude
Arthur George
Arthur Alfred
Jude Henry
Jude Arthur
Jude Oscar
Alfred George
Alfred Arthur

Suggestions:
Thomas
Edward
Patrick
William
Sebastian
Barnaby
Frederick
Charles
Anthony

BoleynMemories13 · 17/11/2024 06:35

You're right that popularity differs from area to area. Despite the stats suggesting all are very popular on a national level, the only ones which are ridiculously popular where I am are Oscar and Jude.

I like George the best. A real solid classic. George Arthur would be the combination I'd go for, as you say Arthur is a family name.

BarkLife · 17/11/2024 07:47

DS1 is Alfred (Freddie). He's the only Freddie in his year group of 200 at secondary (there are others in school). He gets lots of compliments on his name.
