How would you pronounce Clara?

Thinking of Clara for baby girl due early next year however I saw online that a lot of people pronounce it Claire-ah , I’ve always thought of it as Clar-ah (pronounced like Cara but with an L) now I’m in 2 minds as I don’t want to burden her with a name that gets mispronounced all the time. Is it a regional thing how it’s pronounced?

As a Sara, I can tell you she will get both (and will learn to politely correct to whichever she prefers).

Clara was a character in Heidi. Nobody is saying that Clara sounds like Heidi.

As others have said, Clar - ra. I love it it's always been one of my favourites.

Also love Cora, which has a similar sound.

As an aside Cara in the US is also pronounced Care-a. It confused me for so long because a lot of people on Reddit swear by this baby sleep book called Taking Cara Babies which is by someone called Cara. I kept reading it over and over wondering why it was named such an odd thing until one day it clicked that they pronounce it "taking care a' babies" which is such an obviously good name 😆

Surely I can't be the only person to think Clara like Claranet?

@CollisionCourse , If Claranet was a brand name, I'd say it as Clara-net.
I say clarinet as Clarrin-et.

@comfyshoes2022 yes every version of A Little Princess I have seen has Sara pronounced Sarah.
I have always assumed it's like Ann vs Anne. Same name but different spelling.

No, you're not, my previously mentioned colleague pronounces her daughter's name like the first syllable of Clarinet - Clarra.

But, sorry if this offends, it really doesn't sound nice at all. And it's even more irritating when she get's irked at literally everyone else who says "Clah-ra" with the long an instead of the short one.

I think this one comes down to accent, so unlike Naomi, Sara, Helena etc where there are multiple pronunciations and so you would be politely correcting to your preferred one, I think you would just have to accept the pronunciation used. Particularly from Americans.
