How would you pronounce “Louis”?

We are really feeling the name Louis for our little boy. However we wanted a name that wouldn’t cause any confusion when pronouncing it due to me having a life long issue with my own name being constantly mispronounced and I don’t want to inflict that on him. But we really love Louis and to pronounce it as “Louie” but I really don’t like the spelling Louie.

We have 2 other names in the mix Jude and Leo which we both love and will not have the above issue, but just don’t have the edge that Louis does!

I’ve included a poll too 😅

Any opinions?

@Mlanket yeah I thought the Lewis pronunciation was the Americanised version and in the UK/France and Europe is was Lou-ee.

Urgh why do I like this name so much! 🤣

Friends DS is a Louis pronounced Louie.

I think that Lewis is the spelling for the other pronunciation?

Louis Armstrong is with an S! The

NoCarbsForMe · 10/11/2024 13:48

Louie is just spelling it wrong!

GetrudeCoppard · 10/11/2024 13:48

Louis is ‘loo-ie’ and Lewis is, Lewis.

I know 3 Louis and I don’t think mid-pronunciation is an issue.

I wouldn't know whether it was Lewis or Lou-wee, so I'd ask. If I had to guess I'd probably go Lewis unless I knew the family had French heritage/connections.

Yes, me too. Neither is right or wrong until you know otherwise.

Mlanket · 10/11/2024 13:48

@MrsW32 it definitely is in most parts here I would say. Lots of little Louis’s amongst friend group.

Hols23 · 10/11/2024 13:49

Loo-ee is the usual British pronunciation, but there are of course exceptions - eg the gymnast Louis Smith, who pronounces it Lewis.

Mlanket · 10/11/2024 13:49

It’s Daffy Ducks nephews, Huey, Duey and Louie, wonder if the first two will catch on!

NewGreenDuck · 10/11/2024 13:50

I would pronounce it in the French manner. The correct way.

DappledThings · 10/11/2024 13:52

I would say Lou-ee. If I was "corrected" to pronouce it Lewis I would consider I was bring told to say it incorrectly and would annoy me.

Mlanket · 10/11/2024 13:53

@BunnyLake the correct one. Prince Louis, Prince George Louis, Prince William Louis, Louis Vuitton, Louis Theroux, Louis Walsh, Louis Tomlinson, all the French Kings 😆

BoleynMemories13 · 10/11/2024 13:56

Don't worry. It should definitely be Lou-ee. There are a few around who pronounce it Lew-is, but this wrong and quite cringeworthy. It's a French name, French pronunciation.

99% of people you meet will say it correctly, even more so now as surely everyone is familiar with Prince Louis?

Don't get me wrong, Lewis is quite a nice name in itself but it's definitely not how Louis should be pronounced! I prefer the traditional Louis spelling. Louie cheapens it somewhat.

I do like oth Jude and Leo too, but if Louis is the one which has your heart you should definitely go for it.

Mlanket · 10/11/2024 13:56

I think some Americans pronounce Clara Clair-ah but I would always say Clar ra.

NetballHoop · 10/11/2024 13:57

Louis is pronounced Loo-ee
Lewis is for those who want the S sound
Luís is pronounced Loo-iz and is my preferred version but most English speakers pronounce is as Louise.

Coolblur · 10/11/2024 13:58

In my world Louis is pronounced Loo-ee, Lewis is pronounced Loo-iss

Whatareyourpreferredchromosomes · 10/11/2024 13:59

It's Lou-ee. Those pronouncing it Lewis are simply wrong.

I think I prefer Jude, though.

BarbaraHoward · 10/11/2024 14:02

I would default to lou-ee but would happily be corrected to loo-iss. I think it's like picking Helena or Naomi - you have your preferred pronunciation but the DC will get the others from time to time so you have to be ok with that and try teach them to be ok with it.

FrequentlyAskedQuestion · 10/11/2024 14:02

I would say Lou-ie

Would only pronounce the S if it was preferred by that individual.

Lewis is Loo-iss

Printedword · 10/11/2024 14:04

OliviaRodrighost · 10/11/2024 13:24

I’d say Loo-ee. Like the Prince.

(Loo-iss is for Armstrong or St.)

or the place St Louis - famously pronounced differently (ie Louie) in the film title song Meet me in St Louis

namechangeGOT · 10/11/2024 14:06

I'd say Lou-ie with your spelling. Lou-issss to me is Lewis!

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 10/11/2024 14:07

I know two Louis's that are both pronounced like Lewis, so I'd go for that if I didn't know otherwise.

MiseryIn · 10/11/2024 14:08

My original reaction was "Lewis" but I'm not sure why

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/11/2024 14:08

Loo-ee
