Help! Save a poor boy from being called Jocelyn...

EffiePerine · 26/04/2008 08:31

DC2 not due for ages, but DH and I can't find ANY boy's name we can agree on. Girls' names not a problem (we had the opposite dilemma with DS).

DH's sole contribution is Jocelyn . Or Evelyn (though I think he may be joking on that one). Or Offa (he is definitely taking the piss there).

We had thought of James, but common shortening + surname is frankly comic. DH has vetoed John, Michael, Edward and we've used William and Joseph already. Help!

Jonathan?

Christopher?

Lloyd?

Percival?

Daniel?

EffiePerine · 26/04/2008 08:34

Percy I rather like, but don't think Dh is keen.

(He is picky as well as odd)

Offa is COOL

ABQ · 26/04/2008 08:46

Do you actually like Percy?

My DH's beloved grandfather was called Percy, so I'm getting a lot of pressure from him to name soon to be expected DS Percy.

I don't mind the name too much, but I think it might be rather cruel.

I quite like Jocelyn.

How about
Noah?
Luke?
Henry?
Charles?

EffiePerine · 26/04/2008 09:02

Henry we like but we have a William already so though it would be a bit reminiscent. Keep them coming

Wesley and Wilberforce have also been ruled out

Astrophe · 26/04/2008 09:12

I quite like Albert (Albie/Bertie) and Alfred (Alfie/Freddie) and Oscar along your thee of 'classics'.

Astrophe · 26/04/2008 09:13

Oh, and I love Jesse, which has similar sounds to Jocelyn, but IMHO is far nicer.

EffiePerine · 26/04/2008 09:15

Ah, the problem there (and one of the probs with Jocelyn) is that I have a lisp, so am avoiding S names as far as possible

DH suggested shortening Jocelyn to Joss but the idea of me shouting JOTH to an escaping toddler is a bit much...

Albert

cheesesarnie · 26/04/2008 09:17

EffiePerine · 26/04/2008 09:17

it's DEF a possibility

Timothy, Dominic, Thomas, Patrick, Samuel, Henry, George, Charles.......or....Hilary?

PuppyMonkey · 26/04/2008 09:20

Jasper

seeker · 26/04/2008 09:20

Ohh, hristopher. I like Christopher.

Please not Percy - particularly when you've already got a William.......

EffiePerine · 26/04/2008 10:46

I hadn't though of Patrick - good name. I always associate Christopher with badly behaved children - scars from past experience . Plus I don't like Chris much at all.

Alexander? [vested interest emoticon]

EffiePerine · 26/04/2008 10:52

Now I like Alexander and Maximilian, but aren't both getting really popular?

OP posts:
seeker · 26/04/2008 10:55

My ds is Patrick - he's the only young one we've ever met - and everybody likes his name - including him. More to the point, everybody can say and spell it. Have it with my compliments!

AgonyBeetle · 26/04/2008 10:59

We've never had another Alexander in any of the schools, let alone classes that ds has been in. It's one of those names (like William, perhaps) that is always around, always recognisable, but not really fashionable.

A whole bunch of possible shortenings as well, none of them really horrible, which is a plus.

Not Jocelyn. I know a few young female Joscelyns and I always think it it harder on a boy to have a girl in the same class as them with the same name.

My favourites have been already listed, but how about:
Fergus
Dougal
Euan
Jonathan
Edward
Albert
Arthur
Frederick
Stanley
Frank
Lawrence
Oscar
Owen
Peter
Sebastian

However, don't mention these to your hb, as I think he might like them!
Norbert
Bertram
Herman
Hyman
Seymour
Maurice
Arnold
Wilbur
Oswald

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 26/04/2008 11:22

I like Albert and Bertram - but we used the latter for the dog. DH keeps murmuring 'Hereward' for DS2 due next month so I understand your feelings of 'Offa' entirely.

Frederick
