Rare baby names?

BloodyFireworks · 04/11/2024 18:11

We’re looking for baby names that are rare but not trendy. We like Mabli and Frances for a girl and Ivo and Cyrus for a boy but we don’t love any of them. We’d like names that are a bit out there, but not modern.
Any ideas?.

Depending on where you live, Mabli can be very common. My daughter had 4 in her reception class

Thank you for so many suggestions, we like Alaric, Ansel, Fabian, Orson, Ivan, Moses, Tobin, Clement and Otis for boys.
Vita, Ariadne, Evadne, Odette, Tansy, Miriam, and Cleo for girls.
Will add them to our list.

Fabian is nice but just to warn you it’s worth researching the meaning/ society just to check you feel comfortable with those associations.

That’s my worry with Mabli, I know it is becoming quite popular

Yes that’s all it is to my knowledge. But quite radical and I’m always a bit squeamish about naming children anything with political implications. For that reason I’d never shorten Victoria to Tory! But Fabian is a stronger link than that realty and your Dc might not be socialist!

It doesn’t bother me at all. I wouldn’t name my child Enoch, for example (even though I love the name, but Fabian doesn’t seem too bad to me.

But might your child mind? I wouldn’t like a political label… just something to think about.

If I’m honest I don’t think too many people would associate Fabian with the Fabian society. If it was something like Tory then I’d probably avoid it, but Fabian seems okay to me.

Why's everyone obsessed with being different. Some of these names are child abuse

MerryMarys · 06/11/2024 15:23

Names are meant to identify us. Names that are less overused are generally more memorable and fulfill their purpose of identification.

I know ow sooo many adult Steves or young Harrys that it's impossible to identify them without their surname (although I actually know 2 Steve Smiths Shock!)

Exactly! I have such a common name (first, middle and surname) and it upset me so much when I was younger. I want to name my child something that not everyone has.
