I have changed the names for privacy but they are similar style to these!

say DD1 is called Olivia. Discussing names for DD2 and told DH I really love Isabelle but we can’t use it as friends have an Isabelle. DH surprised me by saying he loves it too and he thinks we could use it.

His reasoning:

  • Their DD is 6 so not a similar age to what ours would be.
  • They live an hour away from us so no similar friend circles and they are peripheral to DH main friendship group.
  • We see them twice a year at most.
  • they are reasonable people
  • it’s not an unusual name

I am not sure. I would hate to upset them. I like them a lot and even though we only see them once or twice a year would it be odd to have two children with the same name at those meet ups. I also feel like maybe we should go for a name nobody else we know has used and we might find one we love just as much!

would you use the name or just not get into a potential hassle?

They don't own a name, and with such a common name they probably won't care.

SilverChampagne · 04/11/2024 10:38

Yes.

Comedycook · 04/11/2024 10:39

It's fine

ana7887 · 04/11/2024 10:41

Maybe run it by them..not in asking kind of way, just in a positive news bringing way. I would be kind of honoured someone wants to name their child same as I named mine. Plus I think acknowledging that's it's the same name would take out the awkwardness of them later finding out.

Jasmin71 · 04/11/2024 10:43

I would it's up to you.

Icedlatteofdreams · 04/11/2024 10:46

My DC has the same name as one of my friends DC. They were older and we loved the name. I didn't think twice and my friend didn't mind. There was probably the same age gap that you're talking about.

InTheRainOnATrain · 04/11/2024 10:47

Agree with your DH 100%

DramaAlpaca · 04/11/2024 10:49

Yes, I would use it in those circumstances. No hesitation.

50shadedofmagnolia · 04/11/2024 10:50

Of course I'd use it

Thunderpants88 · 04/11/2024 10:51

I used the same name as my best friend and asked her first. She was pleased

YouveGotAFastCar · 04/11/2024 10:55

I agree with your DH.

I love the name Poppy, and that's out of the question for us because one of DH's very close friends has a Poppy, but we see them all the time. Probably twice a week... so while I love the name, their daughter is Poppy to DH, and to be honest, to me to a certain extent too.

You might really like these friends, but you don't have friends in common, you don't live close by and you don't see each other often. Plus the name is very common, in the top 10, so she'll almost certainly know other Isabelle's already.

ItGhoul · 04/11/2024 11:18

I wouldn't even think twice about using it! They're people you're not especially close to and it's not an unusual name.

Everleigh13 · 04/11/2024 11:20

I would use it.

Needmorelego · 04/11/2024 11:37

Some people you see a couple of times a year?
Of course you can use the same name.
When/if you do get together the girls can just call themselves Big Izzie and Little Izzie and they will probably love that.

sel2223 · 04/11/2024 12:05

Everyone on here will say 'nobody owns a name', 'of course you can use it" etc etc. .... but for me personally in real life? No. I would not use the exact same name as friends or family.

Similar, maybe, so Isabella could work or even a different spelling "Isobel' if they weren't close friends but not exactly the same name (and I would always speak to them first if considering similar).

Or i'd feel fine choosing it as a middle name

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 04/11/2024 12:08

From what you’ve said it sounds absolutely fine to use it.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 04/11/2024 12:10

Of course you can use it. Nobody owns a name. It's not like they're going to be cousins.

Fireworknight · 04/11/2024 12:11

Yes, fine . Different spelling? Nn? Etc

Annabelle has similar alternative?

WithASpider · 04/11/2024 12:19

If you both love it, use it.

In my friends group we have an Isobel and an Isabella. Close friends, see each other regularly, similar age, still not a problem. One is Izzy the other is Bella.

I wouldn't even think twice with a more distant friendship.

Nicebloomers · 04/11/2024 13:40

I think it’s popular enough to not be a problem. I’d use the Isobel spelling as it feels a nicer pairing with Olivia and to differentiate a little (assuming the friend use the Isabelle spelling)

I wouldn’t ’ask them’ if it’s ok to use the name as what would you do if they said they would rather you didn’t?

Morven7 · 04/11/2024 14:10

Non issue

WimpoleHat · 04/11/2024 14:12

It’s absolutely fine. And it’s a pretty standard name, so there’ll be no sense that you “copied” them, if that makes sense?

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 04/11/2024 14:13

Use it.

My dd has a name that's very very unusual, albeit not completely unheard of, in the country we live in. If someone else we knew used it we'd know it was likely 'from' us (which isn't the case for your much more frequent name, assuming it's a similar frequency to Isabelle). I don't think I'd be bothered.

KirstenBlest · 04/11/2024 14:18

Would you mind if they called their DD Olivia?
If you like Isabelle, use it. Don't use Isobel if you prefer Isabelle.

Devilsmommy · 04/11/2024 14:25

What about Isabella so it's not technically the same name but close. Imo Isabella sounds more beautiful 😊
