Hi I’m looking for a name that would work in both English and Portuguese. Our current favourites are Lucas and Gabriel, middle name is likely to be William. Which one do you think sounds better? Open to other suggestions. Also love the name Freddie but doesn’t work in Portuguese sadly.

I prefer Lucas, and think it goes better with the mn William. I also like Felix, Rafael, Leo, Isaac and Xavier.

Terrribletwos · 02/11/2024 05:38

Alexi?

WinterFoxes · 02/11/2024 06:20

I love Gabriel. Also as pp suggests, Rafael which avoids the pronunciation shift issue with Gabriel between the long A in English and short A in Portuguese.

Moreteaandchocolate · 02/11/2024 08:39

Lucas is nice. Or Tomas?

Lucas is nice, and quite popular

Not massively helpful but I love the name João. I'd call my kid that even if I could and not worry about an English name!

BoleynMemories13 · 02/11/2024 11:05

Lucas is lovely. It totally fits what you're looking for.

I've never been a fan of Gabriel, particularly the shortening Gabe.

KirstenBlest · 02/11/2024 12:13

Depends on the surname, and whether you want one that sounds the same in both languages. Both will work in Portugal and the UK.

I like Joao but the tilde won't work in the UK, and I had to ask how to say it when I first encountered it. I'm fairly OK with different language pronunciations but not everyone is.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 02/11/2024 16:27

Lucas William is nice.

i prefer it to Gabriel

BlueberryPup · 02/11/2024 16:30

Lucas will be pronounced the same in both languages. Gabriel sounds quite different (as a child I also saw Gabriels with the English pronunciation being mocked because of how the Ga sounded like Gay. Obviously Gay is no longer an insult, but might be worth keeping in mind).
Arthur could also work in both languages.

Its a very typical Portuguese name indeed but I think most people in the UK including my husband would struggle to pronounce it correctly 😅

Yes the pronunciation of Lucas is more similar across the two languages than Gabriel which is a good point. Hadn’t considered the ‘gay’ sound thing but hopefully as you say probably no longer an issue these days thankfully. Name Arthur is spelled without the H in Portuguese and ideally it would be nice to have a name that’s spelled consistently in both languages.

I like Gabriel too but I think we are in a minority. Lucas seems to be the more popular one. I suggested Rafael which is a good suggestion in my opinion to my husband but he didn’t seem keen.

I have a Gabriel so obviously love that name!! He has never ever been called gay.

Lucas William sounds better than Gabriel William.

Luke William
Felix William
Tomas William

Miguel?

KirstenBlest · 03/11/2024 12:24

I'd avoid Gabriel on the grounds that you won't get people in the UK using the Portuguese pronunciation, and if you try, they'll probably say it as Gabri-EL not Gab-REE-el.

Sebastian, Adrian, Martin

Sebastian, Adrian, Martin

Sorry was going from names that work in Spanish, but just realised that Adrian doesn't work, Martin is Martim and Sebastian is Sebastiao!

I love the name Gabriel from your list and think Gabriel William sounds lovely. I kind of like the idea that Gabriel has two different pronunciations across both families, keeps it fresh.

We have a toddler called Thomas and on occasion refer to him as Tomás (Irish) and it doesn’t confuse him.

We used Vincent for our portuguese/English boy, the portuguese equivalent being vicente which also seems to be increasing in popularity there. Quite often shorten to vinnie though

Mae2B · 23/01/2025 21:00

@Cam007 which name did you go with in the end? It's funny because I was thinking the same thing the other day, which boy's name can be pronounced very similarly in both languages and I was thinking of Lucas too 😁
