Hi, can anyone tell me how to change a child’s name spelling officially when they are 18 months?

I’ve printed off the form off the gov website for deed poll enrolled but do we need a solicitor?

please help, I’m getting confused with the different websites and advice online

many thanks

Does your child not know his/her name at 18 months? I feel that's quite old to change a person's name.

Which country?

They probably don't know how to spell it, no.

You don't need the deed poll to be enrolled let alone a solicitor.

Needanewname42 · 25/10/2024 13:01

Why do you want to change it?

If you are in the UK excluding Scotland, the information is on Change your name by deed poll: Change a child’s name - GOV.UK.

Sorry. This might only apply to over 16s.

It’s a name with an Arabic origin and people are getting the pronunciation and name wrong. We wanted to make the spelling more clearer the actual name isn’t changing.
On the gov.uk form it says something about someone official signing the declaration? I thought it would be straight forward 🫠

So does a solicitor need to over see the whole thing? I’m not sure the websites are legal?

Just do a change of name deed. Not a big deal and your local register office may well do it (mine does - £50ish) or you can actually do it yourself and find the instructions online. Have someone witness the correct wording and then use the signed deed to change the name with whoever you need to.
Do note this won't change the birth certificate and you/your child will always need to keep the deed with the birth certificate in order to evidence the name.
If you have used the new spelling properly and can evidence it, you may be able to apply to the register office for a correction to the birth registration. It doesn't really sound like that's the case though but might be worth a phone call before going down the name deed route.

The rules vary by country. If you are in Scotland you can just reregister the birth

The various web sites will be after your money. Stick to the gov.uk site.
Read all the pages carefully.
From what I understand, you don't need a solicitor, but it might be easier for you to go to a solicitor and let her or him handle it.

One thing to bear in mind is that you'll probably find that people will struggle with the new spelling anyway. Such is life.
