Elliot vs Ellis

Hello! We absolutely love the name Ellis for our baby boy but we wondered if it would be good to give him a slightly longer formal name so he has options later in life (even though I know Ellis is a perfectly good standalone name).
We love the name Elliot too and are considering officially naming him this with the nn Ellis that we would use in everyday life. Do you think this could work?

what if he gets called Elio or other nickname?

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 22/10/2024 16:43

No, that doesn’t work. Ellis isn’t a diminutive of Elliot - it’s a completely distinct name. If you love Ellis then use it. I don’t think it’s comparable to using a diminutive as a given name, eg Alfie, Charlie, Eddie.

Moreteaandchocolate · 22/10/2024 16:52

Ellis is lovely in its own right, I think it would be confusing to use it as a nn for Elliot.

KirstenBlest · 22/10/2024 17:30

Ellis as a diminutive of Elliott doesn't work. Use one or the other. Both are nice.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 22/10/2024 19:43

Go for whichever you prefer. Ellis doesn’t really seem like a shortening of Elliot and is a full name

olympicsrock · 22/10/2024 19:45

Choose one or the other.

Emotionalsupporthamster · 22/10/2024 19:46

Ellis as a nickname for Elliot is a bit contrived IMO. If you love Ellis go for that - it’s only one letter shorter!

Wonderballs · 22/10/2024 19:47

Pick the name you actually want. Does Eliot flow well with your surname?

BoleynMemories13 · 22/10/2024 21:10

I much prefer Elliot to Ellis.

RuthW · 22/10/2024 21:56

Elliot
I'm not keen on unisex names.

worthofbostworlds · 22/10/2024 22:51

Prefer Elliot.

But if you love Ellis, go for it. But it is a name in its own right, it's not a nickname for Ellis.

LoveTheRainAndSun · 22/10/2024 23:06

I prefer Elliot but think you should just use Ellis if that's the name you really love.

Firsttimetrier · 23/10/2024 00:11

DS is Ellis and Elliott is a completely different name, not a nickname in my personal opinion.

Elliott was our back up option but never loved it as much.

Needanewname42 · 23/10/2024 00:25

If Ellis is what you want to use then use it. Both are lovely but completely different names. And it would be confusing to be known as Ellis but actually Elliot

Second thoughts I do have a slight preference for Ellis over Elliot (too close to Idiot for me)

You could give him a longer formal middle name, Ellis James,

BlaBlaBla87436780087 · 23/10/2024 06:04

Elliot is a much nicer name IMO…Ellis is too girly and chavvy

Berlinlover · 23/10/2024 06:27

Ellis sounds a bit feminine to me probably because I’m Irish and it reminds me of the girls name Eilsh. Elliott is a beautiful name.

KirstenBlest · 23/10/2024 08:23

Ellis isn't 'unisex', but in the USA both Ellis and Eliott are considered unisex.
Elis/Ellis is a popular name for boys in Wales.

Carouselfish · 23/10/2024 10:07

I like Elliot much more than Ellis which just sounds too surnamey. I know it's popular in Wales though.
What about Elias?

MerryMarys · 23/10/2024 10:44

Completely different names.

Ellis is definitely not a nickname for Elliot!

Mrsgreen100 · 23/10/2024 10:50

Elliot is a great name
sorry but Ellis not a a great name imo
its a bit “ street”

Newbornhaze · 23/10/2024 13:07

Thanks so much for everyone’s input! I think we’ll stick with Ellis then as I do slightly prefer to Elliot. His middle name will be Joseph which is a family name.

To me, Ellis is definitely a boys name - I took a look at Uk stats and it’s top 100 for boys and not even in the top 1000 for girls. Similarly in the US, much more common for boys. There are actually many more girl Elliot(t)’s in the US than girl Ellis’s

Fantastic choice, and I think it's lovely to use a family name as a middle name too.
