Help with girls names ?

Been going back and forth on girls names for months, we had a short list and managed to discount most of them. Looking for more suggestions as starting to think we’re never going to find a name. Have put the old shortlist below for reference.

Matilda - discounted as I can’t stand Tilly as a nn
Delilah - Husband doesn’t like Lilah as a nn
India - I did like this but a lot of negative comments about naming daughter after the country
Maya - just not sure
Madeline - we don’t like Maddy
Alana - I like this but husband doesn’t

We agreed on our sons name (Henry) so quickly and still love it but we seem to be on quite different pages with girls names.

How about Indigo? I much prefer this to India and still has the Indi nickname.

LadyQuackBeth · 22/10/2024 10:08

Meredith - it doesn't shorten to a cutesy nickname as easily as Matilda and Madeline.

Eloise
Aria

Moveoverdarlin · 22/10/2024 10:09

Yes Meredith nn Merry is good.

Melissa? Underused, bit retro.

Alana - I’m with your DH, how depressing! Take Alan and add yet another A! - Anna however is lovely.

If you don't like potential nicknames then I definitely wouldn't go with the full name as even if you don't shorten it, inevitably someone will eventually. I'm afraid I don't like Alana, it's very dated IMO and I don't think it's as classic as Henry.
Henry and Alice
Henry and Charlotte
Henry and Isabelle
Henry and Beatrice
Henry and Zara
Henry and Zoe
Henry and Olivia
Henry and Clara
Henry and Florence
Henry and Lucy
Henry and Martha

All of those names were on our list.

We also liked Florence, Harriet, Eloise and Eliana.

Carouselfish · 23/10/2024 10:18

I really like Mattie as nn for Mathilda.
Indigo is another good suggestion. Or Indira.

sesquipedalian · 23/10/2024 10:22

Each to their own, but I would not be naming my daughter after a Hebrew seductress (Delilah). I think Florence and Flora are both pretty - or you could call her Fleur if you wanted a name that can’t be abbreviated.

Matilda - I'm not keen on Tilly or Tilda
Delilah - Lilah as a nn - both awful
India - negative comment
Maya - meh and will date badly. I like Mary
Madeline - I like Madeleine, not keen on Maddie
Alana - seems dated. I work with one and she gets called Al-AR-na and Al-ANNa

Suggestions: Anna, Susanna, Lydia, Zelda, Zoe, Melissa
Bit of a random one: Indeg

Just wanted to say that my daughter is called Matilda and she has never been called Tilly. She refers to herself as Tilda, but every adult we know calls her Matilda.

Also have a Jemima. Henry and Jemima sounds 👌🏻

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/10/2024 21:57

Really like India 🤷‍♀️It was used as a girls name before the country was named afaik (although it is likely the girls name also derived from the River Indus). It’s a shame that it’s been spoiled for some people because of colonialism but only you know if you can get past that.

Similar “ia” names might be Claudia, Lydia, Celia, Antonia, Julia.

Magdelene instead of Madeline? Same root but has the nicer nn of Maggie rather than Maddy. Josephine, Selene, Helene, Adeline or Emmeline might be other ideas.

I think Maya is lovely too - although I understand there are pronunciation issues (I personally prefer the rarer “May-ah”). You might like similar Gaia? Less pronunciation issues with than one. Thalia is another possibility.

Marleys my sons name 😅

I had no idea it was a boy's name? Only ever met little girl Marley's: 2 in my little one's nursery and I've taught one too.

Alma feels similar to Maya and Alana.
Eliana or Liliana instead of Alana.

Hi
I have a 10 yr old Delilah
I used to shorten it to Dee Dee or Lile, not sure how it's spelt but pronounced Lie lee when she was a baby/ toddler. (I also dont like Lilah)
She prefers us to call her by her full name and I much prefer this.
We get a lot of compliments about her name
