What do you think of this name for a girl and how would you spell it?

Amelie, definitely. I think it’s pretty but quite common, if that bothers you.

Readyforseptember · 19/10/2024 19:51

Amelie definitely. It is popular though so your dd may end up being known as Amelie S. Or whatever during school years.

StressedQueen · 19/10/2024 20:16

Amelie - it is absolutely gorgeous and pretty. But very popular with a lot of similar names. In my daughter's year, there are 2 Amelia's, an Emilia, 2 Emily's, 1 Emilie and then 2 Amelie's. They all get muddled up quite a bit.

beccahamlet · 19/10/2024 20:17

Amelie. Very nice.

rainbowsparkle28 · 19/10/2024 20:19

Amelie definitely.

Zephyry · 19/10/2024 20:27

Amelie

BoleynMemories13 · 19/10/2024 20:31

Amelie is the usual spelling, so I would definitely go with this.

It's ok, although it does blend in with all the girls of this generation called Emily, Amelia, Emilia etc. However, as an individual name it's right down the lower realms of the top 100 and has been for quite a few years now I think. It's the popularity of the other similar names which makes it feel super popular.

tarheelbaby · 19/10/2024 20:35

Well ... I think you should use the name you like best. How do you pronounce this name you like?
Amélie - most Brits will pronounce this Am' ih lee (like family but without the F)
(French for Emily/Amelia) French pronunciation: Ah' may lee;
Amalie - Am' mah lee (Think of Amalienborg in Germany)

Dazzler27 · 19/10/2024 20:38

With the E

ThereIsATInWater · 19/10/2024 21:28

I know an Amaelia, only one I've ever met.
A-may-leah

A bit different to the usual amelie and amelia.

Moreteaandchocolate · 19/10/2024 21:33

Amelie or Amalia. Never heard of Amalie?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/10/2024 21:44

Very pretty, if perhaps a touch 2000’s - it increased dramatically in popularity after the eponymous film was released, but at least that means most people have heard of it and will be able to say and spell it (rather than mistaking it for Emily). Do spell it the Amelie way, no need to make your daughters life more complicated imo.

bows101 · 19/10/2024 21:47

I know an 'Amalie' and no idea how to pronounce it properly. Tbh, I thought it was a made up name. I wouldn't go with either as both will have a lot of ways to pronounce.
Amelia is original and will never be confused for 'Amel-lia' whereas 'Amal-lie' 'am-uh-lee' etc

MerryMarys · 20/10/2024 11:52

I know an Amalia.

Pronounced Ah MAA lee ah

I like it

user1492757084 · 20/10/2024 11:58

I would choose Amelie because the film is quite well known.

JimNast · 20/10/2024 13:01

Amelie. It seems a bit dated. Emily is nicer.

Amalia (Am-MA-lia) is better than Amalie.
The trouble with both of them is that Amelia is so popular.

Atishooo · 20/10/2024 15:09

I like Amelie but there are sooo many especially with Amelia being so common. How about Adalie?

JimNast · 20/10/2024 15:21

Adalie is awful. Adelie is OK apart from the penguin association.

That’s what I was going to say. Amalia is (probably) the Spanish/Italian version. I like both Amelie and Amalia.

Not Amalie! Everyone is going to think it's 'Emily!' She will get it misspelt all her life.

Amelie is odd too.

I would go for Amelia!

shoopshoopdedoo · 20/10/2024 18:28

Not a fan of Amelie, personally. Unless you’re French, I prefer Amelia or Emily.

Never seen Amalie before so it seems made up to me (appreciate it may not be) - so would choose Amelie of the two options!

MerryMarys · 20/10/2024 20:00

Amélie is the French spelling

In English I'd use Emily
