Everett or Evander

Hi,

I'm having my second son by c-section in a few days and still can't decide on a name!

My top two contenders are Everett and Evander. Middle name will be Danen and surname is a one syllable easy to pronounce fairly common simple name i.e. Lake, Cook, Lott etc.

My oldest has a basically made up name, 2 syllables, sounds similar to some common names but I can't write it as very outing as it doesn't really exist with it's spelling/pronunciation (in my defence he was a covid baby and it took me ages to name him as I was convinced he was going to be a girl!). Imagine something like Deo (pronounced dee-oh) or Matten (pronounced matt-en) i.e. weird but once people know how to say it easy enough and familiar sounds.

I like Everett, I tend to shorten names and like Ev, Rhett, Ever, Evi etc. I think I just really like E names at the moment. I like Emmett and Emerson too although Em just feels too feminine to me which puts me off. I also like Bennett but Ben feels way too common.

Evander was a contender for my first son (my siblings both also love it but it was vetoed for them by their husbands!), I love lots about it - happy shortening it to E, Van, Ev, Evan etc. I didn't know the boxer until I started looking at it (although had heard about the ear incident) and not sure how much I really care about that association. I think it's one that will fade easily and kids won't know it anyway, besides you never know what the next celebrity will be called and whether that will be a good or bad connection so it doesn't really put me off. I already smile and laugh good naturedly when people mix up my first born with a similar sounding name so can easily laugh and let it roll off me if people frequently mention the boxer reference I think.

Other names on my list (but don't like them enough to choose them I don't think) are Sethin, Asa, Efan, Tate, Rafe, Tyde.

Sorry this got long but if anyone has any thoughts on Everett/Evander or any other suggestions I might like I'd really appreciate it! Thanks

I like Evander best as I love the shortenings Evan / Van. Everett is nice but I’m not so keen on Ev for short (although Rhett is nice).

CitrusPocket · 18/10/2024 11:56

I agree Evander has easier shortenings, but personally I don’t like similar sounding names and middle names. For me Evander Danen is too similar in letters but that’s personal preference!

If he googles his name-which he will-or if anyone googles it because they haven't heard it before-which I would- the only one that will come up is the boxer. I wouldn't do it.

Firsttimebabymummy · 18/10/2024 12:22

Evander for sure for me. Always loved it and was at top of my list got boys. Really like the nn's.

Everett is OK but I'm not keen on Ev for a boy which it would most likely end up

CountTo10 · 18/10/2024 12:24

Everett is awful and would make me think of Kenny Everett which is not a pleasant thought.

Evander if you must.

JimNast · 18/10/2024 12:56

Neither. Kenny Everett and Evander Holyfield.

From your list, Asa would be a good choice. Evan is nice, but the Efan spelling is Welsh, and it will get said as Effun or Efun. Rafe os OK. Tyde is awful.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/10/2024 13:21

Evander has such a lovely sound, it’s a bit of a shame it’s so associated with the boxer. If that doesn’t bother you, I say go for it - Evander is a nice mix of uncommon yet familiar (Evan and Xander). Less keen on the sound of Everett - but I do know one and I don’t think he has any issues with the name.

Of your other choices, I adore Asa. You might also like Ivo, Maxim, Heath, Orin, Zev, Laith, Leal or Bram - in the same “familiar yet a bit different” vein?

Thanks all, yeah you are all saying pretty much what I'm thinking, not sure if that's helpful or not :). I did a bit more research and have just found Aric, never heard of it before but it really appeals. Seems to have the easy, simple sounds but unusual thing I want. Harder to do nicknames but maybe as short name doesn't need it. Could use Ari when little, might be cute. Any thoughts on Aric? The only famous one I can find is a an academic of some sort so hopefully wouldn't have the Holyfield issue, unless I've missed a popular culture reference?

I much prefer Evander or Everett to Aric. Ari is nice as a name in its own right though?

BeaLola · 18/10/2024 20:56

I just think boxer and estate agents for Evander and Everett.

Of all your names I like Bennett the most - just don't go for shortening if name if you don't like it.

You could always go Elvis...

Am805463 · 18/10/2024 21:03

I love Everett.
How about Beckett? Or Wyatt? One of my teens is Tate and I still love it as much as when we chose it.

Mysa74 · 18/10/2024 21:23

How about adding an L and making it Elvander? It's a real name, albeit traditionally a bit more of a surname? It's Hebrew in origin...
or Elrond a less well known name from the lord of the rings?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/10/2024 21:54

Never heard of Aric - I suspect people might often mistake it for Eric since that name has come back into fashion now. I do like similar Alaric though - underused and could still use Ari as a diminutive.

BeerForMyHorses · 18/10/2024 22:03

I actually really like Tyde from your list.
Wouldn't be brave enough myself but i like it

Celynfour · 19/10/2024 10:53

Along your Aric lines , what about Alaric ?
