Trying to decide between Hugo or Louis/Louie for third baby. Already have a Theodore and Noah.

OP posts:

Yes Hugh/Huw is a classic name and certainly well known in the UK.
It would be a good choice as a name today, if the parent wasn't looking for a commonly used name, like Noah for instance.
Really old-fashioned names for both boys and girls are making the rounds again.
How does that saying go?Everything old is new again.
🤷

@MerryMarys , it might be less popular now than it was 3 years ago because of who made the name a familiar one.
If a name becomes well-known because of someone on telly it seems new and fresh but in that culture it could be a name from that person's age group.

sadeightiesthrowback · 17/10/2024 19:53

Ah yes, Hugh Grant and Hugh Bonneville to name two; both not likely to inspire young parents of today.
Does anyone see Mungo becoming popular, I wonder? I see that's one Hugh Grant's middle names. 😏

FayCarew · 17/10/2024 20:02

I like it but it seems to not be popular in England & Wales.
Babies called Mungo in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)
Might be more popular in Scotland.

Inspired, I looked up some famous Hughs full names.

sadeightiesthrowback · 17/10/2024 20:23

The only other Mungo I can think of hearing about is Mungo Jerry.
Famous hit: In the Summertime.
Loooong time ago!
Mungo is kind of a cool name really .
The source I looked at said it was a rare Scottish nickname but for what I don't know.

IcedPurple · 17/10/2024 20:25

Louis.

Hugo is a nice name but I think it will sound very dated by the time your son is an adult, whereas Louis is more classic.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 17/10/2024 20:26

Yeah, I don’t think Hugh Grant or Bonneville or even comedian Hugh Dennis (funny though he is) are going to especially encourage young mums to use Hugh (and I suspect Huw will fall further due to you know who).

But Hugh Dancy’s still quite lush, Hugh Jackman’s very popular and people still have a lot of love for Hugh Laurie. There’s a surprising number of famous Hugh’s (I’m well aware I haven’t mentioned all of them), so you’d really think it would be much more popular, especially since Hugo is - a bit like Leo is popular but Leon is still fairly well used too.

A big no to Mungo though! 🤣 To me that’s a cross between a bit of a dogs name (like Digby) and the ultimate posh boy (something like St John).

St. Mungo is the patron saint of Glasgow. Glasgow Cathedral is dedicated to him.

Good sleuthing @IcedPurple that's very interesting.
It's a lot catchier than Kentigern.
I started off thinking it was a strange name, but now I think it's okay, different anyway.
I suppose the inevitable nicknames would be Mung or Go?

FayCarew · 17/10/2024 20:44

@IcedPurple , that's why I thought it might be more popular in Scotland.

Newsenmum · 17/10/2024 20:45

Louie is way nicer. It’s more in keeping with your other names - a bit softer but elegant. Hugo feels more hash.

I think Mungo is kind of a cool name for a medieval saint. Not so much for a little boy today!

ificouldgoback · 17/10/2024 20:51

I think Louis goes really well with your other DC’s names

sadeightiesthrowback · 17/10/2024 21:04

Yes, the one who shall remain nameless has really wrecked Huw as a name any new parent today would choose to use.

I'm actually surprised at how many younger Hughs there are in celebrity culture today.

LOL about the pet name, I have to admit that when I first saw Hugh Grant's middle name, I thought, what a great name for a pet.
But the more I say it and know about it, it might just catch on you never know!

RebeccaRedhat · 17/10/2024 21:09

Louie (and Nathaniel) is the biys name I really can't get away with and Hugo is really popular where I am (I know 6 aged 6-12). I do like Hugo though, and of the 2 would choose that.

Waterboatlass · 17/10/2024 21:12

Louis.
