If you're in the UK, how would you pronounce Asier?

Another suggestion from someone we know. It's a Basque name, and we discovered the Spanish pronunciation, but I'm really curious what comes to mind for Brits?

Also do you think it sounds too close to Vada (pronouced Vay-da) in any way?

I'd always be tempted to pronounce it Ay-shur, because I had a relative called Asher, pronounced like that (a Biblical name - Welsh Nonconformist background).

Frowningprovidence · 08/10/2024 15:58

I would go with ass ee er if I saw it written down.

But I am sure I'd get the hang of the correct pronunciation as soon as introduced.

I normally think mn is a bit hysterical about unusual names and names from other cultures as I work in a multicultural school and they really don't register as different.

But with this particular name you run the risk of 'ass'. Although pp says that hasn't happened so probably not an issue..

I know how to pronounce it … but I’m basque 🙃 lovely name. My son has got a basque name as well, I’ve to say British people pronounce it much better than what my dad (Spanish but not born in Basque Country) does 😃

Blimey that was fast! Thanks. A mix so far.

My inclination is (short) A - see - er (like Aceir, I guess), but any Basque person would tell me that's wrong! It's quite a popular name over there, but obviously anything that could be shortened to 'ass' over here is not...ideal 😂

@FraterculaArctica thanks, that's really good feedback. We're in London and there'll be a lot of diversity in her classes, so I'm hopeful.

@OldieButBaddie Vada isn't our surname. It's our DD's name! And we do call her Darth behind her back sometimes, usually post massive toddler tantrum. It fits!

Edited

@deliwoman1 I think the way you’d pronounce it is the right way. I’m not good at spelling words as I tend to think many times with my Spanish - basque hat on

def. not ay-

A-see - er is kind of what id pronounce it like.

Ay-zee-er

Agree

OneEdgySheep · 08/10/2024 16:15

I’m not sure. This one I’d have to say I’m sorry I’m not sure how to say your name if it came up on my register.
My initial thought was Az-Yair maybe as it looked French.
But I’ve taught too many Irish kids to be bothered about asking first, so I’d ask and then say it.

Ay-shuh - like Frasier but without the F

Yes that’s what I thought too

Lulu1919 · 08/10/2024 17:01

Aay sir

DadJoke · 08/10/2024 17:06

She will be called arse-ier by some people.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 08/10/2024 17:09

Never heard of it.
tbh I'd google it if possible before saying it but if I had to take a stab at it then maybe ay-seeyer or as-eer or maybe it's even asheeyer?
Off to google it now

user2848502016 · 08/10/2024 17:16

Probably to rhyme with Frasier?

ChocolateLemsip · 08/10/2024 17:18

Ay-zee-a

Asier is a boys name btw

LittleOwl153 · 08/10/2024 17:24

Difficult. We have a friend who's daughter is Asyiah... pronounced Ess- i-ah... and I was quite surprised by the spelling. That has an Asian origin I assume though.

IveGotToGoToMeDads · 08/10/2024 17:38

Ash-e-her

usernother · 08/10/2024 17:39

Ass ee er

Gemmy96 · 08/10/2024 17:40

Ah- zee-yeh

Waiting9 · 08/10/2024 17:43

People will call them Asia no doubt

KirstenBlest · 08/10/2024 18:54

Without knowing it was Basque, Azzy-uh or Ay-zher. If I thought it was Spanish Assy-err. If I was attempting a Basque pronunciation, I'd hazard a guess at Assy-err.

Asier in Welsh would be Ash-err

sadeightiesthrowback · 08/10/2024 18:58

A-zeer

Peachy2005 · 08/10/2024 19:30

If I was told it was Spanish I would probably go with Ah-see-ehr (and roll the r a bit 😂) - totally wrong for Basque no doubt.

If I just saw it written down with no clues, I would probably go with Ay-zher (like the series Frasier on TV)

whiteroseredrose · 08/10/2024 19:35

Ace Ear

TheCultureHusks · 08/10/2024 19:43

How is it pronounced?! You haven’t actually said?

This really feels like one of these Hunts for the amazing, interesting yet unheard of Name to end all Names.

OP, stand back from it. Asier isn’t that nice! It’s got Ass at the start and it looks like a laptop. Don’t.

it’s for a boy I assume? How about

Vada and Yann
Vada and Jago
Vada and Piran
Vada and Leo
Vada and Emil

what a strange comment. Must be my basque blood but I much prefer asier than the ones you’ve suggested. Too common imo

op hasn’t also said where they’re from or their partner. I had a list of only basque names and I asked my husband to pronounce them. We didn’t go for the most difficult one but neither is an easy name to say. My son gets asked twice about his name from people we don’t know. Those that know him pronounce his name perfectly. So does happen with mine that is basque and everyone at work pronounces it right.

Ay-zee-er

Same. That was my first thought. Then I thought maybe Azz-ee-er.
