Can't find a boy's name that I love

Dobbycraft · 04/10/2024 21:45

Please help me shorten my list! They are in no particular order and I'm not in love with any of them (I found naming a girl much easier).

Our daughter has a very uncommon name but it also doesn't sound unusual/out there. I would like something similar for a boy but I can't find anything.

Please pick your favourite and least favourite. Also open to suggestions!

Billy
Louis
Jacob
Joshua
Lucas
Seth
Jude
George
Reuben
Jonah
Rory
Leo
Toby

Trying to get that feel you describe along the same lines as your list…

Yann
Jonas
Jago
Sarn

but really like Leo and Rory

EducatingArti · 05/10/2024 15:23

I like Stephen Silas, Marcus, Edgar and David.
All good names but not so common these days.

If you like unusual but not obscure names I think your list is going in the wrong direction they are all names you will hear on a normal day out in town. Of the names on your list Seth is the most unusual at 197th rank many of them are in the top 50
Not to say they are not lovely names but may be why you feel unsure?

I would suggest something like
Conrad
Hendrick
Augustus
Porter
Colin
Seamus
Kenneth
Gilbert
Leopold
Bertram
Ambrose..
all known boys names all of them around 1000 in popularity list.

Bertram??

toomuchcardboard · 04/10/2024 23:01

There aren't many Simons about at the moment.

Very true - once so popular for years. There are 2 in my office, several more in the building and I’m married to one 🤣

BootballJoy · 05/10/2024 16:36

Billy - fine
Louis - very popular
Jacob - nice
Joshua - ok
Lucas - ok. Luke is less popular round here
Seth - really dislike. I don't like 'th' at the end i.e. in Meredith, Lilith, Edith, Beth, Ruth, Judith.
Jude - not a fan
George - ok
Reuben - very popular
Jonah - fine
Rory - nice
Leo - great
Toby - fine

Agree with PPs the list is mostly very popular choices.
Less popular -
Robin
Benedict
Matthew
Eric

Vincent
Tristan
Nico
Philip (Pip)
Otto
Owen
Evan
Caspar

Some terrible names suggested on this thread. Such as Colin! Who the fuck in their right mind would call a baby Colin?

OSU · 05/10/2024 17:23

Definitely agree that your list features more popular boy names. I like Reuben the best from it.
Alternative names that I think (guessing) may be more rare:

Richard (Richie)
Rory
Christopher (Kit) love Kit...
David
Martin
Mark
Claude
Guy
Phillip
Alexander
Euan
Ryan

If you want to be a bit more out there but still a known name:
Cosmo
Inigo
Abraham
Silas
Abel

I like Colin🤷🏼‍♀️ I know its reviled on here, but I've never heard it mocked IRL. Eric OTOH is not a great choice if there is even a remote chance the kid will be doing GCSE English Lit...

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/10/2024 19:42

I like Eric.
How about Otto,@Dobbycraft ?

Colin's nice but like Alan, Graham, Neil, Paul etc it's not the current style.

17caterpillars1mouse · 05/10/2024 20:23

None of your list seem to fit your want for unusual but not too out there, they are all very common

Billy - the kid. No
Louis - very popular and I find it a bit meh
Jacob - lovely, but I know 2 baby Jacobs so must be quite popular

Joshua - love but dislike Josh sould wouldn't use

Lucas - lovely

Seth - i really hate Seth

Jude - nice but very popular

George - i just find it a bit dull

Reuben - like

Jonah - nice

Rory - like but seems very popular. I think it will date

Leo - nice enough but again very popular

Toby - not a fan but love Tobias

A few suggestions

Nathaniel
Roiben
Rufus
Rafe
Patrick
Elliott
Euan
Lawrence
Otis
Raphael
Gabriel
Adam
Scott
Willoughby
Cormac
Hamish
Everett

polkadotpixie · 05/10/2024 20:44

We have VERY similar taste in names 🤣

This is my list:

Jude
Ellis
Leo
George
Oliver
Sebastian
Seth
Jonah
Asa
Cole
Elijah
Isaac

DH wants Jacob, Reuben or Rory but I'm not overly keen on them

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/10/2024 21:31

“Uncommon but not unusual/out- there” - I’d say Seth from your list is a good shout. It’s well known (possibly as it’s better used in the States and we are all exposed to US pop culture) as well as Biblical and simple to say and spell but it’s quite underused in the UK already and falling further in popularity. Most of your other picks are either much more popular currently or a lot trendier and rising quickly in popularity (even if they aren’t Top 100 yet.)

Another idea might be to look for names that have mostly never quite “made it” in terms of top popularity (possibly because some of them are quite similar to names that have) -thinking of names like Marcus, Nathaniel, Owen, Evan, Tristan, Benedict, Dominic, Joel. Or consider names that were so well used 50 years ago, but are now a bit more unusual - John, Robert, Peter, Simon, Jonathan, Nicholas.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 06/10/2024 08:39

Elliott, Edward, Edmund, Eric,
Richard, Elias, Joseph, Francis

Daisybuttercup12345 · 06/10/2024 23:51

Painter with the middle name decorator 😂

Bradderson · 07/10/2024 02:15

I like Louis.

Also:

Magnus
Asa
Ludovic (I know a Ludo in his 40's, always liked the name)
Barnaby

notatinydancer · 07/10/2024 10:13

I like
Luca (similar to Lucas)
Rex
