Names that also work in Norway

We're moving to Norway shortly after the birth of our second baby and are hoping to avoid a name that would sound strange, e.g. has an unpleasant meaning or difficult to pronounce in Norwegian. So if anyone has any knowledge of the Scandinavian languages, it would be helpful to have some input on either name suggestions or ones to avoid!

We're both British so wouldn't necessarily want a Scandinavian name. We currently have no boys names on our list but for girls we like Skye, Elsa/Ailsa, Iona & Orla. Our son has a common Scottish name.

Thanks in advance :)

Stellan is a lovely Scandinavian name boys name, it’s easy to pronounce and spell, it works well in English and Norwegian.

Mendingfences · 03/10/2024 16:33

Elsa will be pronounced more easily than Ailsa (although prople will learn :-)) Orla should be easy, Iona will be ee oh na rather than eye oh na on first reading. Sky is cloud and pronounced sort of simiar to "she"
Freya as suggedted works fine, also nora, Anna, nadia, Maria, emilia, mina

Magnus, finn, lukas/lucas, markus/Marcus, Patrick, Fredrik, oscar, Robin, noah, are all easy

A lot of Scandi babies have very un-Scandi names now so very much worth looking at popular names lists.

The only one I'd avoid is Richard, my relatives couldn't say it no matter how hard they tried.

Look at the official top babies name for Norway.
Name statistics – SSB

Looking at the women's football team will probably give you names that were popular in about 2000 - 2005.
