Thoughts on Lyra?

Hi everyone,

im due to have a baby girl in 3 weeks and my husband and I still can’t decide on a name!! My first choice was Ada which he has gone off and his faves are Jasmine and Isabelle neither of which I would choose as I know a few of each!

we both like Lyla but he suggested Lyra today and I like it! We are thinking of Lyra Grace Elliot. I haven’t heard the name much and it’s not that common. Anyone have any thoughts on the combo I have put above?

many thanks!

I think it's beautiful

Sandybeaches5 · 02/10/2024 01:41

OP, you wouldn't choose other names because you know a few of each, but I think you'll be also be knowing of quite a few Lyras before long, as the name will likely become more and more common.
Also, it sounds similar to too many other names, and I don't think it matches your surname either.

PrincessOfPreschool · 02/10/2024 01:53

I work with kids and not come across another Lyra. I have an E surname and my daughter's name ends with an 'a'. I do sort of wish I had a consonant at the end, her nickname ends with 's' but only close family use it.

Isabelle/ Isabellas are ten a penny, as are Mia/ Miahs.

PrincessOfPreschool · 02/10/2024 01:55

Emmeline Elliott sounds fab. A bit like Jasmine but more unusual and the alliteration is very cool.

orangalang · 02/10/2024 02:08

Lyla is quite nice. But ditch the Grace middle
Name. If you can't think of anything better then settle on Grace like every other pathetic middle name of this era. Grace or Rose... I actually love those names but they are such standard middle names for girls now it's weird

Love Lyra. Makes me think of His Dark Materials.

Same

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 02/10/2024 02:22

@Livingbysea

it really only matters what you & her Dad think. If you like it, then use it!

personally I don't like it, I never did. Saying it makes me feel like I have a mouthful of bolts. To me it feels clumsy & like a command (like instructing a dog to sit)

I once looked after a toddler for a few months & I thought this would get me sorted as she was a real little cutie, but it didn't. It still doesn't feel nice to say, or sound nice.

and it's a right mouthful with Elliot.

sorry, but it's only my opinion & quite irrelevant to your life really.

ivykaty44 · 02/10/2024 02:48

i have heard of a few Lyra

Celticgold · 02/10/2024 02:51

It’s lovely choose what you like.
I had my daughter in 1999 she was always hoing to be called Hope. She is Hope Amelia. At the time people said that’s weird but I loved it and only know one more Hope. I have a great niece called Margot Olenna which I love. Each to their own I feel. Ignore what people say go with what you like!

Love it!!!!

BoleynMemories13 · 02/10/2024 07:10

If you love it, that's all that matters. However, I just wanted to point out that Lyra is one of the fastest rising names out there right now. Since Ed Sheeran and his wife used it, it has rocketed out of nowhere up into the top 100. That's not necessarily a problem, I just wanted to make you aware that, even if you've not come across any yet, there are definitely lots out there (contrary to your belief in your opening comment). Not sure if that will change your opinion?

It's happens so often with rising trend names. People actively pick it because they think it's not that popular, only to find it most definitely is among their child's age group.

Wrongsideofpennines · 02/10/2024 07:18

I first heard it when that journalist Lyra McKee was shot by the IRA in Londonderry a few years ago. Her name was pronounced Leer-ah. Unfortunately that's all I think of when I hear it. And I've heard it quite a few times since for babies.

Chipsintheair · 02/10/2024 07:21

Lyra is very popular due to His Dark Materials. I like it.

Ruby is also from Phillip Pullman and goes well with Grace Elliot.

SometimesCalmPerson · 01/10/2024 16:41

It’s lovely but makes me think of Lycra.

This

MonsieurBlobby · 02/10/2024 07:23

I love it, I know a couple but it's not super common.

whathashapoenednow · 02/10/2024 07:24

I like it but it is popular at the moment and I don't like the nickname lie

MonsieurBlobby · 02/10/2024 07:25

(I wanted to use it because of His Dark Materials, DH wasn't keen, am relieved because one of my closest mum friends also used it!) But don't actually know that many others.

Cas112 · 02/10/2024 07:34

I just think of lycra

sel2223 · 02/10/2024 12:07

I just see Lycra, sorry

Or a misspelled Lyla/Layla

BootballJoy · 02/10/2024 12:09

Lyra is a nice name, great Dark Materials connection. But I don't think a name ending in 'a' goes with Elliott.

Jasmine works well. Or a name ending in 'ie' like Sophie or Mary. Or Grace as a first name.

MoralOrLegal · 02/10/2024 12:11

I only know it from Philip Pullman!

Ignore the middle name, and all but one of those will be -a Relliott.

StressedQueen · 01/10/2024 17:03

Really, really gorgeous and I love it - one of my favourite names! I always think of the character in His Dark Materials who is fantastic

This!!!

fashionqueen0123 · 02/10/2024 12:40

Sorry but it’s just like Lycra to me.
I think Lila would be nicer.
