Name dilema!

Hi all
Having another boy very soon and need to decide on a name.
Opinions welcome as I'd rather it from strangers, than friends or family. I'd also like to keep it as a surprise.

Ideas:
Josh
Freddie
Alfie

Already have a son called Jack, so whatever we choose needs to go with that!

Thank you!

My husband is very keen on Josh. I'm not sure, does it look like we've shortened it from Joshua??

Jack and Josh is lovely imo :) no need for Joshua if you'll just use Josh

Noah
Joseph /Joe
Joel
Lucas
Craig
Leo
Liam
Henry
Harvey

Alfie will be Alf and Freddie Fred.

Short names - Kit, Seth, Sam, Saul. Joel, Luke, Heath, Finn.
(Max, Zac, John, Jude etc not included)

I'm suggesting Robin.

I think Gary, Barry or Larry would go nicely. Smile

MonsteraMama · 27/09/2024 11:46

Oh god anything but Alfie. Working retail has secured that name as "the name of all feral little boys", I heard it shrieked at ten million decibels across the shop at least once a day. "AL-FIIIIEEEEEEE, PUT THAT DOWN OR NO HAPPY MEAL". Nope.

I think Jack and Freddie go nicely, although Freddie is becoming very popular recently.

TallulahBetty · 27/09/2024 11:48

Sam, James, Leo, Callum, Arlo?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/09/2024 14:28

You only have to look at the stats to see that Josh as given name is much rarer than Joshua (45 babies in the last birth stats vs 1478 Joshua’s).

But does that really matter? - people do tend to use the name people tell them verbally, and if people do assume, he’ll just have to correct them. It’s not going to happen to Jack, Max, Harry etc because they are so popular as names in their own right (John, Maximilian, Henry). But I bet loads of Alex’s, Sam’s etc have to deal with the same thing.

An alternative with the same sound would be Osian - pronounced “Osh- an” where I live in Wales and very popular. Think it’s used in Ireland too (though the pronunciation might be different). But I don’t think it’s made it much to the rest of the world so Josh might still be a safer bet.

If you love Josh use it, it’s hardly a name that should cause him loads of hassle - it’s pronunciation and spelling is familiar at least and he’ll soon get used to correcting the odd person who assumes (or use Joshua on the BC and just call him Josh from Day 1 - that’s what a family member did and I think her (now adult) DC has only been called Joshua a handful of times in his whole life!).

Alfie and Freddie go fine with Jack.

I quite like Joshua but really dislike the shortening Josh. Using this as a stand alone name is very late 90s/early 00s. I also don't like shared initials.

Jack and Freddie would be my choice.

Pooeys · 29/09/2024 14:29

Josh is lovely but do you want same initials?

LoudPlumDog · 29/09/2024 14:51

Jack and Reuben
Jack and Benjamin
Jack and Thomas
Jack and Angus
Jack and Connor
Jack and Adam
Jack and Nicholas

Freddie could be the final decision we make! Appreciate all the advice. It's helped 😊

Aah so lovely to read a decision on names . Freddie is lovely. Xx

Lelophants · 29/09/2024 22:54

Archer goes quite well I think. Or Archie.
Alfie is cute. Feels similar to Theo or Teddy.
Max.
Leo.

AgainandagainandagainSS · 29/09/2024 23:02

Freddie and Alfie both sound juvenile (only Mr Mercury and Mr Boe can carry those off and still sound like grown men)

Freddie was Mr Mercury's stage name and Mr Boe is Alfred.

Agree. What's your thoughts on Freddie? Do you agree with the comment above?

I'm not keen on it or Alfie, but both are popular names, so plenty of people do like them.
Both are OK but I don't like Fred or Alf.
Freddie is better than Alfie.
I like Charlie and Harry, and both go with Jack.

Yes. Joshua is nice and he'd be Josh to friends and family. There are names I like more but it's fine. What puts me off it a little is that Jack and Josh seems a bit matchy. I'd get used to it and they'll only be 'Jack and Josh' to you.

Thanks. I'm toying between Josh and Freddie! I know what you mean about them sounding similar, Jake, Jacob would be worse I think. I looked up the name checker on Census and Freddie doesn't show as popular as the others. Maybe it depends where you live & how much you hear it?
I also like Harry.

In order of popularity: Freddie, Alfie. Joshua.
Babies called Joshua in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)
Both Jack and Josh peaked in the 1990s.
I know lots of Harrys and Jacks, but only one Freddie and an Alfred. Alfie seems popular for dogs (all poodle crosses).

The stats for Alfie and Freddie might be skewed by some being registered as Alfred and Frederick.
