As the title says would really appreciate no one being too savage. I am asking for opinions but be gentle with me.
36 weeks pregnant with my third baby , first boy. With my girls I just knew their names nothing and no one could of swayed me but this time I'm struggling
There's one I LOVE but it is quite unique so that's what holds me back but then I think I look on this thread daily currently and in 20 years time when he's an adult his name is not going to stick out.
Surname one syllable Irish name.
Rocky
Sydney ( definitely spelt this way)
Phoenix
Harrison ( would like this as middle name to Rocky)
Sonny ( becoming really popular near me )

Thanks in advance

Rocky absolutely not.

I know a young man whose father wanted to call him Rocky and he said thank goodness Mum talked him out of it!

” Rocky marriage” springs to mind.

Harrison is about the only one I’d choose out of that list and that reminds me of Prince Harry.

They all sound very American.

Back to drawing board?

Edit : When baby arrives , you might decide on a more suitable name ( that suits him)

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 24/09/2024 19:52

Harrison is the only one of those I'd give to a human baby.

Another one agreeing with this.

Edingril · 24/09/2024 22:22

Harrison if I was forced to pick one

miniaturepixieonacid · 24/09/2024 22:35

Rocky - quite like it but see it more as a nickname. Maybe Rocca
Sydney ( definitely spelt this way) - I thought it was a girls' name spelt like that. I actually like it for a girl but don't like Sidney for a boy for some reason.
Phoenix - like it. I had a very cool friend called Phoenix at university.
Harrison ( would like this as middle name to Rocky) - like it but I teach a nightmare one at the moment so it's currently tainted for me personally.
Sonny ( becoming really popular near me ) - quite like it. Also Solly (for Solomon)?

DelphiniumBlue · 24/09/2024 22:37

I've met a couple of boys named Phoenix, both lovely kids so I have a soft spot for the name.
Otherwise, Sydney/Sidney is OK, but Rocky and Sonny are not really proper names, although you could use them as nicknames, and Harrison is a surname. Personally I don't like surnames used as first names, but I guess Harrison could be Harry or Sonny. Although why you would call a a child a name that means Harry's son, I don't know. Unless he is Harry's son...
Anyway, what I or anyone else thinks doesn't really matter, you can see there are lots of different views, so just go with what you like.

shoopshoopdedoo · 24/09/2024 22:39

I quite like Sidney, but not Sidney.
I’m not keen on any of the others personally, but I’d pick Harrison if I had to choose.

SanMarzano · 24/09/2024 22:39

I’d go with Harrison, or Sydney at a push. Sonny, Rocky, Phoenix - let’s just say I’d hate to be named one of those myself.

Comedycook · 24/09/2024 22:41

They're all fine...not all are my taste necessary but I wouldn't bat an eyelid at meeting a child called any of those names.

Jessieshome · 24/09/2024 22:41

Aww I get the 'be kind' you've got to be thick skinned for Mumsnet, it's a bizarre place I've been absolutely flabbergasted at the comments I've seen on here! Looks like everyone has been kind.

These sort of names are not usually my taste but
Rocky - actually kind of like it, I associate it with the movies and the films and character are pretty damn cool!

Sydney - I like, but I get why some people suggest it's feminine, if spelled Sidney it's definitely masculine.

Phoenix - I first heard this 13 years ago when a friend had a boy called Phoenix, I thought it was absolutely bonkers at the time, but now seems fairly normal, although it's going to be very out there for some people.

Harrison - I know a 12 year old Harrison, I love it.

Sonny - also love, I know 1 ten year old, I wouldn't say it's terribly popular here. I half wished I'd had a 3rd son to use this name, although I'd have possibly have used the 'Sunny' spelling, short for sunshine (although there's no way anyone would have let me get away with that!)

Good luck 😊

Dolliesdisasterousdayout · 24/09/2024 22:42

Sonny is my favourite followed by Rocky.

Moreteaandchocolate · 24/09/2024 22:44

Harrison is by far my favourite 🤩 Lovely name and I love Harry for short.

Roscoe has a similar vibe to Rocky and is a nice alternative?

Emmanuelll · 24/09/2024 22:44

Sonny is really cute.

timoteigirl · 24/09/2024 22:52

If you like Phoenix, what about Draco?

The others make me think you are a rock chick. If I heard Rocky I would think I misheard. Why not Rock? Or Rusty?

More suggestions: Sully - from Sullivan. Bryce. Wyatt. Flint. Sheridan. Cooper. Raven. Fox. Kit.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/09/2024 00:35

While I do have quite different taste in names to you, I think as “surnames as first names” go, Harrison seems quite nice and very useable as it benefits from having a choice of nn’s in Harry or Sonny.

Sorry, trying to be kind but really not keen on your other choices - Rocky is only used for dogs where I am and to be honest sounds like it, Sonny is a fab toddlers name or nickname but sounds a bit juvenile on an adult to me (Sonny Bono aside), and Phoenix only works for really hippy types to me (or weirdly drag queens or adult entertainers!). And I don’t think it’s fair on Sydney to always have to spell his name (plus that spelling is more common for girls which he might dislike).

Would you perhaps like Sullivan? Has hints of Sonny, Sydney and Harrison.

AdaColeman · 25/09/2024 00:59

The Sydney spelling is normally used for a girl, so if you use it you will be letting your son in for a lifetime of people misspelling his name or assuming that he is female.

Sonny is cute when they are a toddler, but less cute when they are a six foot four hairy chested, bearded lumberjack!

Harrison isn't too bad.

mrssunshinexxx · 25/09/2024 02:38

@Jessieshome I'm thankful I've not been battered over it ! Everyone has different tastes and I'm really taking my time going back and forth to make sure we land on the right one for him

We would use Harris as short for Harrison , not Harry. Sorry maybe should of mentioned

Remaker · 25/09/2024 02:48

I live in Sydney, know 3 children called Sydney and they’re all girls.

Your taste is different to mine but I think Harrison is ok. There’s an Australian footballer called Harris Andrews, I think that’s his full name not Harrison. I’m not generally a fan of surnames as first names but I don’t mind it.

AgileGreenSeal · 25/09/2024 02:50

Definitely not Sydney (the female spelling) for a boy, please - he will be forever trying to correct spelling mistakes!

If I had to choose one of that list it would be Harrison, by a mile especially with a one syllable surname.

Needanewname42 · 25/09/2024 02:57

Rocky - definitely not, sounds like the film, or a nickname. Maybe consider Rocco

Sydney - different but go with the traditional spelling Sidney, which makes it easier to shorten to Sid, Syd looks weird and reminds me of Slimming World Syns

Phoenix - different i quite like it.

Harrison - over used where i am 12 kids in a group 2 Harrisons and a Harris

Sonny - No very childish to me like calling your child Junior. What about Sammy?

Needanewname42 · 25/09/2024 03:42

Another alternative to Rocky would be Ricky which brings to mind Nicky.
Rocky just sounds like a jokey nickname, not a shortened form.

mathanxiety · 25/09/2024 03:46

Sydney is the way all the girl Sydneys I know spell their name. Sidney is the boy version.

The only names I like from your list are Phoenix and Harrison.

Jenasaurus · 25/09/2024 03:53

as long as your surname isn’t Road I would go with Rocky x

Jenasaurus · 25/09/2024 03:55

Jenasaurus · 25/09/2024 03:53

as long as your surname isn’t Road I would go with Rocky x

Although the only 3 Rocky’s I know of are Sylvester Stallone, the British man that took Jay slater to the BnB and a friends Alsatian

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 25/09/2024 04:38

Do I like Rocky Harrison? No.
Do I think you should use it if you love it? Absolutely.
Sydney definitely the female version, don't make his life difficult. I've spent 50 years correcting the spelling of my name and it's very tedious.

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 25/09/2024 05:58

Rocco and Sonny are becoming popular.
Harrison is standard.
Sydney is female.
Phoenix I've seen for a girl only.

Rocco Harrison is fine
Sullivan a pp suggested is nice
