How do you feel about the name Jesse?

7 weeks to go and trying to find a preference on our shortlist.

I accidentally have set my heart on Jesse. My husband likes it but is hesitant because it's also a girl's name.

He really likes Gabriel/Gabe. I liked Gabriel enough to put on the shortlist, but I've almost immediately gone off it. I loathe Gabe as a nickname.

Thoughts/opinions? Older brother is Eli.

There are three names : Jesse.
The biblical boys name.
A diminutive of Jessica
And a Scottish variant of Janet.

The only time I’ve come across it is in Toy Story. To me it’s a girl’s name.

lovelysunshine22 · 23/09/2024 21:49

I love it as a boys name but don't like it for a girl!

WGACA · 23/09/2024 21:55

Nathaniel (Nate) would be better.

LAvortonDeLaLitière · 23/09/2024 21:57

I never know how to pronounce it - is it Jess or Jessie?

bravotango · 23/09/2024 22:00

I like it,.it's common in church circles round here. I also like Asher which is common in similar circles and goes nicely with Eli

bellamountain · 23/09/2024 22:01

I like it, I think it's a more widely used name in America but definitely growing here in popularity.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 23/09/2024 22:01

It's very American

Years ago my grandpa called my male cousin 'a right Jesse' - he meant he was a bit wet and not very manly. I haven't heard the phrase since so probably has no bearing on your choice!

I grew up thinking it meant effeminate due to that saying.

PuppiesLove · 23/09/2024 22:25

I love Jesse and I've never heard of it being used in a homophobic way. I was going to call one of mine Jesse, but had a girl, so went with a very different girl's name instead.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/09/2024 22:29

I know a little Jesse with the middle name Reuben. He gets called Jesseroo.

CrushingOnRubies · 23/09/2024 22:34

It's nice

But if I had a child at school and they told me they were invited to Jesse's birthday I would automatically assume it was a little girls birthday

Also there the infamous outlaw and the Cher song!

sunshineandshowers40 · 23/09/2024 22:35

Love the name!

CrushingOnRubies · 23/09/2024 22:35

Oh and Jesse Rory's boyfriend on the Gilmore Girls.

Just American bad boy vibes I guess

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 23/09/2024 22:39

I love it

ladycarlotta · 24/09/2024 09:37

I really love it for a boy. Gorgeous. Very sweet for a baby/toddler but then strong for an adult man too. I'd use it if we weren't having another girl.

Surprised at how many people associate it with the girls' name Jessie which is a diminutive of Janet or more recently Jessica. Jesse is an Old Testament man's name and its use far predates Jessie for a girl. I suppose the 80s popularity of Jessica explains the idea of it as a feminine name.

sel2223 · 24/09/2024 14:24

Jesse and Gabriel/Gabe are both great names! You and hubby have excellent taste

sentfromiphoen · 24/09/2024 14:54

We have a male Jesse in the family, he is only 9mths old; but the name really suits him.

Go for it

Katrinawaves · 24/09/2024 15:00

I like Jesse too and the only one I know in real life is English and a boy.

Not a big fan of Gabe. Other names with potentially a similar vibe could be Gideon, Jake, Rafael, Benedict?

Wingingitmama92 · 24/04/2025 08:59

My son’s name is Jesse. I didn’t know any Jesse’s before I had him and now we are always meeting new Jesse’s.
we get a lot of compliments on his name.
I think it’s such a cool name but I’m biased.
Go for it!
he also gets called JJ as his second name is James and I like that too

Reddelilah · 24/04/2025 13:50

It looks and sounds so feminine.

Jessica is often shortened to Jessie
