Thoughts on Wesley (wes)

I've only just found out I'm pregnant with baby number 3, we have two boys and I'm assuming the 3rd will also be a boy.
I've always liked the name Wesley nn Wes but I can see from old threads some people think it would be cruel, is it really that bad? We live in New Zealand where the names not common but not unusual.

Thanks 😊

You wanna see the state of our Wes!

Really? I think of Wes Morgan, the handsome footballer first. Isn't it odd how we see names so differently dependent on our experience. My DS has a name that is regularly described as "chavy" or a "naughty boy name" on MN but again, I think of some extremely good role models with the name - they seem ignored by a lot of people because again, they are Jamaican.

Yes name impressions are definitely something that are heavily dependent on your previous experiences of knowing people with them. In particular, once you’ve known a dog by a certain name, you can never unhear it as a dog name - even if, objectively speaking, it’s a lovely name.

I think, though, that’s why these threads can be interesting as it opens your mind to other views of names.

@Calliopespa no offence taken. Everyone has their own likes/dislikes but for us he was Wesley before he was born and we have never thought any different on the name. I am sure there are plenty of names out there that I would turn my nose up at.

To be honest it was lovely to see the OP even considering this name as you don't hear it much. So if if you love it OP go with it if you do have another boy 👦🏼

I think of Wesley as being of the same era as Wayne. I’ve taught Wesleys and Waynes in the same era.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply :)
It is very true that a name can be tarnished from experience., i work in corrections so some names are completly ruined now :( The only wesley I've know was a little cutie who was in the same day care class as my son.
For those saying I might not have a boy I'm 100% aware of that, I'm just going with my gut feeling.

I actually really like it but my granny used to call Christmas tree baubles "Wesley bobs" and I can't get that out of my head either.

MooseBreath · 22/09/2024 17:53

I have a Westley (NN Wes). We have had very mixed opinions, but I love the name and so does DS. Have yet to meet another one! I quite like Wesley as well, but we named DS for The Princess Bride character.

Congratulations!

NashvilleQueen · 22/09/2024 17:56

It was around when I was at school. I don't like the sound of it. And I don't like 'Wes' as a nn.

NashvilleQueen · 22/09/2024 17:57

Apologies to those that have a Wesley. If any consolation my children have names that are often disliked on here!

PolaroidPrincess · 24/09/2024 07:01

I really like it. Only ever met one, we went to school together and you could not have met a nicer chap.

Congratulations on your PG Wink
