ds4 is 5wks old, dp wanted to call him ralph, i said NO, we also thought about rufus, but thought ti was a bit too poncey.

in the end we settled on Rudi

i like raphael, but dp said no cos of the turtles....

DrNortherner · 20/04/2008 20:29

Haven't read all teh thread but Ralph reminds me of a penis.

Anyone who read Judy Blume will know why.....

ruddynorah · 20/04/2008 20:33

i'd think penis too.

Hulababy · 20/04/2008 20:34

Ralph - Ralf surely?

pandapanda · 20/04/2008 20:41

I know 2 Ralphs. One is an old man. One was in my year at school so is 33 now. Both pronounced Rafe. school ones nickname was Rolf but was called Rafe by teachers etc. and if you phoned his house.

nappyaddict · 20/04/2008 20:41

i would pronounce calf carf too. how else can you say it?

allgonebellyup · 20/04/2008 20:44

Haha - i was just going to mention the "forever" book by judy blume.
i always think of a cock when i hear the name Ralph.

Weird, just put dd to bed and she got out this teddy from the back of the wardrobe and said "i love Ralph bear", and i briefly thought "who would call their child that name???
Then i saw this post!!!

Booboomum · 23/04/2008 20:17

Laughing very loudly because I too think of a penis...if I tried really hard could probably tell you the page number of the book....but that would be very sad!

EffiePerine · 23/04/2008 20:22

Ralph pronounced 'rafe' perfectly correct

like Magdelene and Magdelene (mauldlin) - can't remember which is Oxford and which Cambridge

or Powell pron Pole

or Featherstonehaugh pron Fanshawe

or Mainwairing pron Mannering (cf Dad's Army)

EffiePerine · 23/04/2008 20:24

"
Americans pronounce the man?s given name with a spelling pronunciation, RALF. The British usually prefer the older pronunciation of the name, which rhymes with safe, as with the name of composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. The British spell the name either Ralph or Rafe."

So Ralf is actually american

savoycabbage · 23/04/2008 20:25

That bloke out of 'the apprentice' is called Raef and it's pronounced just like it's written.

Nero · 23/04/2008 20:41

I would just snigger cos I'd think of the penis in Forever.

But I'm childish like that.

pipintroll · 24/04/2008 19:28

i would recommend Potsie or Fonz to her instead.

bogie · 24/04/2008 19:30

It makes me think of ralph from the simpsons

nowwearefour · 24/04/2008 19:31

aimsmum i was wondering if that was what the post was going to say too ! we must be women of a certain age!

slinkiemalinki · 24/04/2008 23:47

I'd have to ask her or avoid referring to him by name until she had!

muggglewump · 25/04/2008 00:31

I'd have to try not to snigger. I'm afraid I'm another Forever reader and I'd think the child was named after a cock

elfinblast · 25/04/2008 00:41

I'd call him sweetie or other affectation.

I read Forever too!
