Is the name now off limits?

I need opinions. I’m expecting baby number 3 shortly, and we had decided on the name Jonas. Jonas was actually our seconds baby’s name for a little while whilst I was pregnant, but something didn’t feel right about it so we ended up going with a different name when he was born. Since we didn’t use it, there has always been a small part of me that regretted not using it.

Now for the dilemma - after my son was born I told people that his name was Jonas whilst we were pregnant, and that we were going to call him Joey whilst he was younger. My brothers girlfriend was pregnant at the time and was still deciding on a name. A couple of months later my brother and his girlfriend had a baby boy and used the name Joey. Must admit I felt slightly annoyed about the situation but knew I shouldn’t because we had made the decision to use a different name so really there was no reason they shouldn’t use it. Could I still use Jonas or are they too similar?

I think you're fine as long as you don't use Joey as a nickname.

purpleme12 · 10/09/2024 08:56

Use it

If you like it just use it

MistyF · 10/09/2024 08:56

I feel like you could still use Jonas nn Joey, but I don't see why you wouldn't use different nickname. Jonas is definitely not off limits. I assume you nephew is Joey full name?

tosstofthetown · 10/09/2024 08:56

I wouldn’t use Joey as nickname with a nephew Joey, but Jonas would be fine

sel2223 · 10/09/2024 09:09

I think the nn Joey is now off limits annoyingly but not the full name Jonas

Firsttimebabymummy · 10/09/2024 14:41

Use it and use the full name day to day / different nn

FinallyPregnant23 · 10/09/2024 14:46

I’d use them both to be honest, you said them first, surely your other family know you’d said that too. Jonas is a different name and Joe/HJoey is a natural shortening of it. I’d do it.

Jonas is fine - while I understand the Joey nn, it’s traditionally/often assumed to be for Joseph, a completely different name to Jonas.

But unless you are a big family and DS will have lots of other cousins (where names often get repeated), I think it would be a bit odd for the Grandparents to have 2 “Joey’s” , so I’d try not to use that nn with DBro and the Grandparents.

This

Joss as a nn?

Kitkat1523 · 10/09/2024 18:54

Jonas is fine….joey is a no go now

TomatoSandwiches · 10/09/2024 18:58

Jonas is fine to use but I wouldn't be using Joey as a nn.... not sure Jonas needs a nn tbh.... except perhaps Jonasaurus?

VenusClapTrap · 11/09/2024 13:02

I’d probably just pick another name.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 11/09/2024 13:34

It's annoying but I think I'd pick another name. The reality is that both boys are probably going to end up as "Joe" by the time they are 10 - "Joey" is a bit babyish, and Jonas doesn't really shorten to anything else - you can't exactly have "Jone" or "Joney" (because Joan, Joanie).

Evanandjoesmum · 13/09/2024 23:36

My Jonas is a Joe, aged 8. He was JoJo when little, or JoBo or JoRo (middle name starts with Ro). Jobo the Bonobo
also. It's an excellent name and you'd be wise to give it to your boy 😍

Joe, Jonas, Joey, all feel rather tired and worn out.
