Not comfortable with my son being a “junior”

Brainstorming baby names for when my son arrives and my husband is very into him being called junior. His official government name would be John but we would call him junior at home. Thoughts?

OP posts:

Like Katie Price and Peter Andre's son? Tell him that and it should be enough to put him off.

TemuSpecialBuy · 09/09/2024 10:48

Unless you are American it would be a strong NO from me

2chocolateoranges · 09/09/2024 10:48

No please don’t, it’s so chavvy!

Procrastinates · 09/09/2024 10:49

You clearly don't like it so it's off the table. Both parents should like the name they choose for their child it's as simple as that.

This!

Jonathan / John nn Johnny so it's a bit different?

EngineEngineNumber9 · 09/09/2024 10:49

Let him be his own person, not a “junior” version of someone else.

TeenToTwenties · 09/09/2024 10:49

As in his Dad is called John, and you are naming him John Junior like the Americans (so his son would potentially be John III?)

Not keen.

(Have distant relatives in USA they are onto 7th or 8th generation of same name!)

Haroldwilson · 09/09/2024 10:50

Yeesh, nope

This is the only correct answer. Both parents should agree on a name.

Is your husband happy to be called Senior then

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Baby names are a “two yes, one no” situation. You don’t like it, so it doesn’t matter how into the idea your husband is. It won’t be your son’s name.

Outside of that general point, parents naming their children after themselves make me wonder if they’re vain, unimaginative or a bit of both.

CleftChin · 09/09/2024 11:20

I hate it.

JJ is marginally better (John Junior) but TBH, I put my foot down about naming DS after his dad (And his dad's dad, and his dad's dad's dad) because a) I'm not having my name-choices dictated by a pointless tradition, b) they already had issues identifying who was who to official authorities, and c) it was a boring name anyway.

I compromised on him having it as a middle name, with a name of his own as his first name.

Ha yes do this instead

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 09/09/2024 11:29

It’s very weird. When you say ‘official government name’ though, does that mean you’re not in the UK? Because it would be off-the-scale weird here but is it more usual over there?

MouseofCommons · 09/09/2024 11:29

Do not do this. It smacks of toxic masculinity giving a son the same name as dad.

pinkfleece · 09/09/2024 11:30

Vomit.

JollyJellyCat · 09/09/2024 11:33

My DH has the same first name as his dad but is known by his middle name. Much better than Junior.

Or call your DH Daddy?

I do like John as a name in itself but in this situation it is impractical!

I believe many users here are speaking like being from USA is default, or are unaware this is British site.

MistyF · 09/09/2024 12:14

OP if you're not on board, he can't make you name your son name you dislike. John is legally not your son name if you say no to the registry.

Glitterbiscuits · 09/09/2024 13:22

Hell no. That's just awful.

Normallynumb · 09/09/2024 13:46

Hell no
He's an individual who deserves his own name
My exh tried this with my first DS
Similar short name too

Normallynumb · 09/09/2024 13:47

I did compromise and agreed to it as a middle name
Could you do that?

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 09/09/2024 13:54

Yeah spend a week calling him John Senior to try it out.
