Are these names too similar?

Hello,

I am currently 16 weeks pregnant. I don't know if I am expecting a boy or a girl but I like to have names early on so it gives me a few months to change my mind.

I lost my first son when I was in my third trimester and his name was Arlo. We are now thinking that we really like the name Arthur if our expectant baby is a boy. We struggle with boy names hugely!! We love the name but we don't want anyone to think it is a variation or tribute to the son we lost.

This is important to us as my babies are unique. We just love the name Arthur. We do have a daughter - our son Arlo, our firstborn who passed, then our daughter and now this little bean so there is a name to separate them almost.

Anyone's thoughts?

So sorry to hear about Arlo. I wouldn't think they're too similar - Arlo and Arthur are completely different names, congratulations on your boy x

I'm so sorry you lost little Arlo, I think Arthur is a lovely name and not too similar. If you both love the name i think you should use it :)

sel2223 · 06/09/2024 16:44

First of all, I'm so sorry for your loss.

I wouldn't hear Arthur and think it was a variation of Arlo, although truthfully, I might think it's a subtle nod to his big brother.
Not in a bad way or anyway that stops him having his own identity or means he'll be living in Arlo's shadow etc. Just in a way like when people use the name of a relative as a middle name or a long standing family name that's been passed through generations.
It's not obvious and certainly doesn't make the name Arthur unusable, i would just think it was a sweet touch.

Sorry for your loss.
I don't think they are too similar in those circumstances.

I think if you had twins and were needing to shout upstairs to call them, and were labelling clothes etc with one letter etc etc etc then I'd go for different letters, but these circumstances are very different, and the names are quite different in that sense.

Completely agree.

Sorry for your loss. Flowers
The names are not too similar.
Best wishes and a hug. xx

Not at all too similar. Yes the first sound is the same, but the second sound is very different and they have a very different vibe.

Plus, Arthur is just a lovely name.

Yeahnoforsure · 06/09/2024 20:35

I think Arthur is a great name; very masculine and strong. I can't see it being too close in sound to your dear little one's name; Arlo. In some cultures, it's traditional to name a child after someone dear to you that has passed, by giving the new child, boy or girl, a name with the first letter of the name being the same as the first letter of the name of the one who has passed. Best wishes to you and your family.

Mandarinaduck · 06/09/2024 20:44

On the one hand I agree with pp that they are close enough to be subtly linked while different enough to be individual. I think in all honesty though I’d go for a completely distinct name if you have another one you like. That said, Arthur is a lovely name.

ColdCottage · 06/09/2024 20:58

So sorry for your loss.

I don't think they are too similar at all. You could even name him Arthur Arlo Suname in honour of his big brother. A middle name from a loved one is very popular, just a thought.

Don't do this.

@AOMum14 I'm very sorry to hear of your loss of Arlo🥲

It's fine to use Arthur, it's different enough. I wouldn't even think anything of it, if twins had these names.

best wishes with Bean

I think Arlo and Arthur are good brother names ❤️

So sorry for your loss OP x

They are different names - just got a similar starting sound because those sorts of names are popular now, so don’t worry

Congratulations

That’s really overstepping PP.
