Too similar?

I have a son called Reuben (who we mainly call Roo at the moment, but will likely be Reuben more when he's older). I'm expecting another boy, and we LOVE the name Oberon... but is it too similar? We will nickname him Obie when he's young. Maybe someone can think of another full name that could have Obie as a nickname? It doesn't have to be an exact match... (e.g. we also have an Evelyn who is Effie).

Another name we like is Eben.. they're just all the same! We love Noah too but this is my nephew's name.

So 3 questions...

What do you think about the similar sounding brothers names? REUBEN + OBERON

Any other full name suggestions for nickname Obie?

And also opinions on two cousins having the same name (Noah) as that is also a possibility.

I wouldn't, I'd choose something different.

LittleGreenDuck · 06/09/2024 09:20

I think it's fine. How about Esben?

wellingtonsandwaffles · 06/09/2024 09:21

If you always use nick names then it shouldn’t be an issue, but yes as full names they are too similar. Haven’t come across Oberon outside of Shakespeare but it’s nice, though obie does make me think of Star Wars! Obadiah could work. Or anything O + B - Oscar Benjamin type thing … Otto Barnaby. …

EatingHealthy · 06/09/2024 09:22

You could use Obie as a nickname for Tobias

I wouldn't use them together, they run into each other and it's a mouthful

Any other full name suggestions for nickname Obie?

You can't control nicknames / diminutives, so I wouldn't choose a name solely based on using Obie.

Lots of people will say it's fine, and plenty of cousins share the same name. But there are millions of names out there, so I would try and choose something else.

Eden

I don't think they're too similar, especially if they're going to be Roo and Obie

But aternatives could be:
Toby
Robert
Robin

theduchessofspork · 06/09/2024 10:04

How about Abraham? Abe or Bram

… it’s a bit less similar. I don’t think Oberon is unusable, but agree it’s closer sounding to Reuben than you’d want.

Re Noah - it’s a common enough name, but it’s worth sounding them out if you see much of them - no point causing annoyance

Would Nathan or Jonah work as alternatives to that?

Enko · 06/09/2024 10:06

Personally I think they are fine together.

Tobias nn Toby or just Toby is a good idea

The trouble with Obie as a nn is most kids will associate it with obi wan kenobi so he may drop it when he gets fed up w Star Wars jokes.

Why is everyone apparently using these juvenile ‘ie’ diminutives to wonderful names?

Love this idea!

Firsttimebabymummy · 06/09/2024 10:55

I think it's fine but I really like Tobias suggested above!

DeCaray · 06/09/2024 11:02

Would Obi-wan Kenobi work?

Gemstonebeach · 06/09/2024 11:05

What about Obi? I don’t think Oberon is too similar but it has too much meaning to be a modern name.

as others have suggested Tobias is lovely!

Other options:
Oliver
Sebastian
Nathaniel
Ryan

Theoldcuriosityshop · 06/09/2024 11:10

Oberon was the King of the Fairies. I can imagine the jokes from other kids when they find out. It's a lovely name, but I'd be wary of using it.

CookieMonster28 · 06/09/2024 11:10

I don't think too similar

I know a baby Obie...I really like it!

My DD has a 'nickname' full name and currently pregnant (don't know gender) and our contender names are 'nickname' names again and could argue our girls choice is similar to DDs name...but then I'm not one who likes typical traditional names!

If you like it go for it!

Because 'ie' names are wonderful names too.

Wouldn't it be boring if everyone had the same traditional name!

Orlando could be an alternative for Oberon.
Oberon is too fairy king.

Great Idea ❤️ Tobias and Reuben work really well together - both a similar style and popularity level (or at least Tobias is much more popular/well known than Oberon)

I do love a Shakespearean name myself - my fave is Orlando with the nn Orry; but with Reuben being so popular now, Oberon seems a bit of a different type of name in comparison.

BodyOdour · 06/09/2024 14:37

I was thinking Roo and Lando.

carrotcard · 06/09/2024 14:38

Nothing like each other

BodyOdour · 06/09/2024 14:47

r-b-n and -b-r-n
I know a family with kids called something like Samira and Samir, it's not an issue.

Heavenlyhoumous · 06/09/2024 19:23

I think it's fine

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 06/09/2024 19:25

Oh no please don't call a baby Oberon.
