Retro girl names

I only have a few days before I’m due and we still haven’t decided on a name. We’ve narrowed down boys names to Dale, Lyle, Floyd and Dean. I know these names won’t be to everyone’s taste but they’re what we’ve decided on and we’ll most likely wait and see what name suits the baby the most.

For girls we are a bit stuck, we like similar names to what we do for boys, sort of mid-century maybe even a bit ‘dated’ and not very common now. More retro than vintage. We like Darla, Patsy, Tansy and Thelma/Velma but not dead happy with any of them. Darla is probably our favourite but I think it’s becoming a bit more popular. I prefer prettier names for girls than I do for boys. Any ideas?.

Siunds like you're going for a rockabilly feel, American 1950s. You might enjoy this discussion:

Ready for Rockabilly names?

That’s brilliant, thank you! Will go through them now.

What’s with the Scooby Doo bashing?!

SingingSands · 27/08/2024 10:44

Great names 😀

I also like Dale for a girl. Might be a bit out there for some, but I think it works.

I like it for a girl as well, it’s quite feminine sounding.

Also really like Dewey for a boy, which we hadn’t considered before.

Shona is great and very uncommon.

Also what about Deirdre? Trudy? Candy or Cindy? Bonnie?

I know quite a few Shonas, not in the UK, all probably in their 30s now.

I think Angela (Angie) and Frances (Franny) belong on your list!

Wow I didn’t expect so many replies. I like Penny, Shirley, Judy, Twyla, Sally, Betsy, Nancy, and Julie.

I’m also glad someone likes Velma, I think it’s brilliant and can imagine a really cool girl called Velma but not sure if I’m brave enough!.

Velma is the brains of Mystery Incorporated on Scooby Doo.

How about Sharla? I heard someone called it and thought it was quite nice.

Illpickthatup · 27/08/2024 14:01

My cousin's were born in the 70s and are Pauline, Kirsty and Lyndsey.

kfellover · 27/08/2024 16:24

I like Sharla and Tawny.

I think we have our shortlist sorted now, will update you all when baby is born.

My vote would be Sharla. Tawny sounds a bit like a strangely pronounced Toni. Sharla is lovely.

ScabbyHorse · 27/08/2024 16:52

Sandy, Doreen

shoopshoopdedoo · 27/08/2024 17:52

I really love Eula from your updated list! Also like Shona.

Not keen on Darla, which feels a bit more twee/Southern US to me. Twyla was my least favourite as it just seems a bit wishy-washy compared to your other choices, most of which I think are great!

Also love the suggestions of Wendy, Shirley, Judy and Trudy!

kfellover · 27/08/2024 18:14

I’ve spoke to DH and I think we have decided on Sharla.

Eep, I’d be worried she’d get called Shart- la at school - but maybe you live in an area with really nice schools. Marla or Darla would be safer. I do like Shona though, I’ve only ever met one but she was lovely. From your original list Tansy is also quite sweet.

I suppose it’s similar to Charlotte though, I can’t imagine many Charlottes get called Shart-Lotte.
